I'm going to Phoenix for a couple days and was hoping someone could recommend a spot or two for rockhounding? Going with a non-rockhound brother but he doesn't mind going if I buy him a beer (or three).

Its bad rock hounding the City of Phoenix and surrounding area all the rocks are covered by dirt deep covering
but if you want to hound lots of river rock a good area in the city limits is the Salt River a dry river
The best place to enter the dry river bed is at McKellips and the Freeway you can park right at the bottom of the river bed and walk right in lots of rock!
nothing good for lapidary that I could tell but I don't have a good eye there got to be some agate!
plus the ancient river ran down from the Superstition Mountains so if there was any gold up there well you get the idea
I assume your non rock hound brother lives in Phoenix? so he'll know where I'm speaking of
good luck and if find any good spots let us know
Ed

I know a place in Gilbert where you can collect various Onyx's, Jasper's, Serpentine, Agate, Pastelite, Opalite , Lizard Stone... All sorts of great sphere material. And there is a Fridge full of COLD Beer.

I went to Cave Creek area this past weekend and found lots of onyx near Seven Springs. I think the location is in one of the rockhounding arizona books but if you want directions let me know. Also there is a spot for jasper in a shooting area off Table Mesa Road but I didn't check that one out too well since there was a cleanup going on that day and way too many people all over the place so no place to park plus I didn't want to get roped into helping with the cleanup (had rocks on my mind).

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll have to check those out. And Shogunner...your spot sounds about my speed right now as I'm recovering from a back issue and probly won't be up to as much hiking as originally planned!

There is the Salt Mine in Camp Verde for Halite and Gypsum/Calcite pseudomorphs after Glauberite. It is really easy to get to as well. Here is the Mindat link www.mindat.org/loc-45093.html

Just about 20 miles west of Phoenix area is a secret spot covered with different agates and jaspers! It is everywhere. Reds, yellows, blues, whites, moss, plume, fortification and more! A hidden gem it is. Anybody want to go? Seriously!
