I got excited to click this thread and see your beauties and you didn't let me down. I have run out of adjectives for your work. ;D
Have you considered a small sticky tutorial on how you do this so perfectly? I have some Davis Creek that I'm afraid to touch.

Hi Tela,
What kind of tutorial? For the cat's eye or just cabbing? I think Obsidian is an easy material to cab as it's all one Mohs and works up so quickly. Just spend twice the amount time on 1200 and up to get a perfect polish. As far as the cat's eye cut, I start with a slab that is at the very least 1/4" thick but thicker is better. When doing your shape do a very narrow cab with the highest dome possible. Carefully mark out the direction of flash before cutting out the shape. I learned how to do it from an old Bobby1 post where he showed pictures of cut and orientation. I'll see if I can search out that old thread....

I meant the ob, sorry- although all your cabs look great! Thanks for the tips. My polishes look good, although not as good as yours. My pictures are in diffused light and so not very flattering.
My efforts with ob have been somewhat frustrating. I can get a good polish on the usual snowflake, etc. As far as the rainbow/color types, I'm just not finding the best orientation and ruining pieces. I have a sfrb of Davis Creek. My first efforts were terrible and I have been justly intimidated.

If it's cutting rough then this is a great thread: forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/index.cgi?board=tips&action=display&thread=42517If it's orienting a slab, hold it at the angle where it would lie on your neck as a pendant and turn the slab slowly until you get the orientation of flash the way you want it. Then use a pencil and mark the flash and draw an arrow to what will end up as the top of your cab, then create your shape. I always hold the slabs up at an angle instead of working on a flat surface because the end result I want, is for the stone to flash when someone is wearing it as a pendant!!!

Thank you very much I shall try to do better. I don't know why I didn't think of that since that's how I orient specs and labs for pendants. DOH! LOL!
