Rattlesnakes ain't nuthin' They're damn fine eatin', and make great hat bands. Too many bones, not enough flavor, too much work for the protein. Hat bands? If ya like crappy leather for a hat band. Their skin is pretty thin! LOL, that's why you back snake hide with a thin piece of cowhide.

I am surprised to see the horned toad. I thought those were just out here in the Southwest. We used to catch them all the time as kids but with the growth here all of our natural wildlife including the lizards that used to be here and tarantulas have all disappeared unless you go way out of town. The spider is not a tarantula. Here is a pic of a tarantula I took out by the lake:

And the rattlesnakes do not go out of their way to attack. They slither away if given the chance like this guy who tried to get away from me when I was trying to get his photo: He did not coil up until he got fed up with me following him.

Actually James, I've personally only shot 1 rattler in my life. That's when I went up a wash not much wider than the gap shown in your pics. On the way back out I came face to face with a good sized western diamondback. He was headed in the direction I was coming from, and wasn't giving up ground as rattlers often will. The sun was starting to set, and I had no wish to be in the dark with that critter. 2 quick rounds of snake shot and it was safe to continue out of the wash.

James that is a very nice Panamint rattlesnake! I saw one on Saturday but forgot the camera! NICE! Thanks for letting me know what kind it is. I really liked the colors of the snake and never saw those colors in a rattler before. Ran across him hiking back up from the Goldstrike hot springs by Hoover Dam.
