There is a lot of chemistry going on Scott Salt can be white and really throw black. The white stuff is the norm in southern most coral zone. My coral mentor sold his rock shop years ago. He had thirty 55 gal drums of heat treated coral from the best sources. The knappers love it cause they can make 10,12,14 inch spears w/out a single fracture.

James, do you ever find specimen-type corals? Those things go for a few bucks! Check out this site I stumbled across the other day. When I used to do the raffle for our club, I picked this up in Quartzsite for a raffle price: Sorry, not the best picture, but it is really pretty and glittery. I got it as a special door prize, not a regular raffle item. The gal that won it was very happy to have it! I only paid $30 for it in Quartzsite, I can see he gets asks significantly more for similar. I know you have fun cooking it and playing with what you bring home, but I think you need to keep your eyes open for more like those!
