Sauntered?
Man I got a epiphylic headache. You sure got those plants figured out. Amazing discussion.
There is some kind of a skunk trap that keeps him from spraying you. I can not remember what it was like.
Here it is

To heck w/that. You guys just put boxes around a Havahart ??
Yes, sauntered, James. In retrospect, I wish I would've set up my camera on a tripod, and taken a video of the release. As it was, I dropped the trap door open, then turned back to the truck to get my camera off the tailgate. I only got the one shot of him leaving. He was in no hurry, he just sauntered away. But I was in a hurry to do it quickly, as there were signs everywhere saying no parking, no stopping on road, no dumping, under video surveillance (because people drop truckloads of trash there - some people are such pigs!), etc. , etc.
Thanks for the link on that enclosed trap, James. Something like that would make it a lot easier. Although, should the skunk spray, you'll still stink, even when you don't get hit directly. But maybe if he knew he was enclosed, he wouldn't spray, so as not to asphyxiate himself?? And yes, I just opened up a cardboard box, covering most of the live trap, placing a chunk of petrified wood on top to hold it there. I removed the rock, and spread a large trash/lawn/leaf bag over the cardboard. I replaced the rock on the trap-door end (where there was no cardboard), and pulled the cardboard out from under the bag - slooooowlly. So the bag was left, covering the top, sides, and one end of the trap, the bottom was open. I secured the bag with two straps wrapped around the cage - didn't want it to blow off while I was driving there. What would I have done then?? I only hope if (when) I have to do it again, it goes as smoothly. BTW, I set the trap again last night, in case Scott was right and there are more. Did not catch another - yet! There'll be more over the summer, of that I am certain.
The first one that I trapped, I heeded the neighbor's advice about covering the trap. I stuck the trap into a trash bag - NOT the right thing to do!! When those skunks are trapped, they stick their little feet out through the cage bars and dig and destroy anything they can get their hands on. The bag was totally ripped to shreds, and the far end was filled with dirt that he had dug up. When I picked up the cage, I nearly dropped it when it swung down at the heavy end! I'm thinking even with the live trap, I might cut a sheet of metal and wire it to the bottom. Of course, it will make it a little harder to clean out, 'cause you now they are going to poop in there (he did)! But at least it won't drop out on the ground while I'm carrying it to the truck.
One at least a couple of occasions, we have popped them with a pellet gun. But they will always stink that way, and then you have a body to dispose of. I'll take my chances on them spraying, and let them be able to walk away on their own four feet.
