I could just as many reports of adverse effects of coffee including all the health problems caused by the crashing of the adrenals such as asthma, allergies, sexual dysfunction, hormone imbalances, immune suppression, increased inflammation, thyroid dysfunction, etc. Coffee has also been linked to fibrocystic breast disease, anxiety, insomnia, etc. Then there is the fact that the high tannin and oxalate content of coffee blocks the absorption of various nutrients and medications. Same reason we use coffee grounds to bind old medications to render them useless. Coffee is also extremely high in carcinogens primarily generated from the roasting of the beans. And it has been linked to pancreatic cancer for one: Coffee and Cancer of the Pancreas www.nejm.org/doi/pdf/10.1056/NEJM198103123041102Coffee consumption has also been linked to other cancers including breast, kidney and bladder cancers. A lot of the studies that tout the benefits of coffee are highly questionable. First of all most were funded by the coffee industry so of course they are going to make coffee appear beneficial. But take for instance the claim that coffee reduces the risk of Alzheimer's. First problem with this claim is that they cannot diagnose Alzheimer's without an autopsy. Therefore, many cases of senile dementia, which is most often medication induced get incorrectly labeled as Alzheimer's. Being that the vast majority of cases of senile dementia are medication induced and coffee blocks the absorption of medications then we may have an answer to this one. But blocking certain medications can also result in death also thereby preventing the onset of long term drug induced dementia. They also claim coffee reduces inflammation even though it has been proven to do just the opposite in the long term. Caffeine can reduce inflammation in the short term for a simple reason. Caffeine, as well as theophlylline and theobromine in coffee, block the breakdown of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP). cAMP acts as an anti-inflammatory agent primarily by blocking inflammatory leukotrienes. This is why an old time remedy to stop an asthma attack was to drink a strong cup of coffee. This blocked cAMP breakdown, which in turn countered histamine and the more problematic leukotrienes. Problem is that caffeine only blocks cAMP breakdown. A primary stimulator of cAMP release is epinephrine (adrenaline). This is why during an acute severe asthma attack or anaphylaxis you would use epinephrine, which raises cAMP. Doctors will use theophylline, a close relative of caffeine, to block cAMP breakdown for a longer effect. When the adrenals are crashed though by regular caffeine use the adrenals fail to put out sufficient epinephrine resulting in a lack of cAMP and thus increased inflammation. The lack of epinephrine output is also the reason some people say they can drink a cup of coffee and go right to sleep. With the adrenals crashed there is insufficient epinephrine to maintain proper energy levels. As for the claim of a reduced risk of diabetes again this is highly misleading. For one thing stimulants like caffeine increase blood sugar levels by increasing cortisol output which in turn mobilizes glycogen stores in the liver. Their claim is based on the fact that coffee is thermogenic and thus can reduce body fat that can help with diabetes. But increased body fat is not the only, nor the most common cause, of type 2 diabetes. Deficiencies of chromium and magnesium that keep the insulin receptors open is the most common cause of type 2 diabetes. As for type 1 diabetes coffee would only aggravate the condition by not only increasing blood sugar but also aggravating the autoimmunity aspect. And coffee will not help with gestational diabetes either since this involves a hormone imbalance. But the coffee will again aggravate the condition by further increasing blood sugar. This will also increase the risk of delivery complications by increasing the fetus size even further. Decreasing the risk of depression is also highly questionable. Depression does not have a singular cause but rather a multitude of causes including low serotonin, low dopamine, low norepinephrine, low acetylcholine, low prostaglandin levels, high prolactin, adrenal dysfunction, hypothyroidism, elevated progesterone, hyperparathyroidism or other sources of hypercalcemia, various medications, etc, etc, etc. How is coffee going to address all these causes? In fact, coffee can make aggravate some of these causes such as from adrenal dysfunction, hypothyroidism and hypercalcemia. I could address the other questionable health aspect studies presented but I am getting ready to head off to bed. Bottom line is that anyone can find studies to prove a point. But we need to look at those actual studies and check for things like conflicts of interest. Also how these studies were designed, conducted and interpreted. Keep in mind that when Prozac came out they were claiming the drug had no side effects. Later it was found that Prozac had more side effects than any drug in history including increasing the risk of severe suicidal depression. If we simply relied on the biased drug company studies how many more people would have died or been injured from this highly dangerous drug? By the way, NEVER drink coffee before going to the doctor. Not only will this raise your blood pressure, but caffeine also raises cholesterol and triglyceride levels, blood sugar and PSA counts. Therefore, you can end up on a lot of unnecessary medications because of the false readings the coffee can induce.

We need more people like Si in this world. Very nice gun. I have to agree. His self deprecating humor is infectious! My M2 shoots 5000 shells between cleaning. I clean it not because it really needs it, but because... well... ya gotta clean it once in awhile, dontya??

And I take a calcium supplement (as all women should!) to boost the bones. Not that easy. Calcium will not build bone alone. Silica is the most important nutrient for bones. Next is lysine, proline, glycine, vitamin C and boron. Then comes calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, strontium, natural fluoride (traces), manganese, copper, zinc, sulfur, vitamins A, D, E and K and essential fatty acids. Taking calcium by itself is not going to do squat for the bones, but can raise blood pressure, increase muscle cramping, cause constipation, etc. Calcium needs to be balanced with sufficient magnesium to prevent these problems and without a collagen matrix and sufficient silica the minerals are not going to do anything to build bone health. There is also the factor of the form of calcium. Carbonates (oyster shell, dolomite, coral) are pretty much worthless after the age of 40 due to the decline in stomach acid, which decreases absorption. Acidified forms of calcium such as the citrate or malate are absorbed significantly better. By the way, tannins and oxalates in coffee block the absorption of calcium and other minerals as well as other nutrients. Caffeine promotes bone loss.

Okay, so first my bones will start breaking, and then I'll die of cancer... Oh well, something's going to kill us all someday. Might as well enjoy the finer things in like (like coffee!) while I'm still around!

I believe I will die in the paws of a bear someday. May he wake up the next morning shaking and craving a smoke.

I tried coffee by itself and hot but found it too bitter, even with cream and sugar, so now my morning dose is, a cup of ice, a double dose of instant coffee, a banana, non fat milk and my morning Slimfast. All blended into a huge smoothie. Really good tasting, and keeps me full and hydrated till lunch. Only drawback is, on range days, the coffee gives me a major case of gunsight jitters.....Mel

Mexicano in the making. I use one of those too, only mine is stainless. I don't let aluminum anywhere near my food. Might as well eat with lead utensils. Lee

Lets see, pro coffee studies funded by coffee companies, How dare they be interested in their product.
And let me guess, the "coffee is evil" studies most likely funded by "everything you do is bad for you, please be paranoid and come to my clinic so I can suck your wallet dry" naturepaths.

Lee, it seems you are worried about aluminum in alzheimer's patients.
I have it on good authority that Alzheimer's is a combo of virus and genetics. The aluminum is only a sympton for those that already have it. It's pretty clearly not the problem since aluminum has been used in beer/soda cans for like 40 years or so. The "coating" on aluminum cans is aluminum oxide. The same for my coffee pot.
Plus I make coffee in that thing like once a year and half the time it's for someone else!

That's weird. My sister was just visiting here a couple weeks ago and brought that exact coffee pot with her. I've never seen a coffee pot like that but then again, I'm not a coffee drinker.

Great little espresso maker. I have one just like it that I used to take along back packing. Yessir! I used mine with coffee section almost full, one heaping teaspoon of cinnamon and two spoons of sugar, sealed it up and brewed a pot. Poured it onto milk and I had a Mexicano. Not bad, really. The problem was my hair still itches from the caffeination effects.

None of those sissy little espresso cups for me. I used to brew a full mug of espresso in the morning to get me going. Have a caffeine buzz until noon.
