Didn't they get shut down now by the BLM since it became wilderness?

Wow pretty cool video. That's an area in the west I've only read about and never visited but I was able to buy some rough off one of those guys at Quartzite, I still have. One wonders about "relinquished their claims in 2005". I wonder if that means, had their claims stolen and closed by the freaking government as it often did in Mariposa County where our ranch in California was. Bruneau Jasper is one of the most beautiful and valuable quartz gem lapidary materials. Hard to imagine any claim owner giving up their claims voluntarily.....Mel

Can anyone tell me who the participants are? I've lost my hearing. I went to the rifle range a few weeks ago without adequate ear protection and someone was firing a rifle as loud as a cannon. It left me functionally deaf -- permanently. Wish the video had closed captions! I visited the Bruneau mine years ago.

It is interesting to me the BLM would utilize these guys for a "public service video" and then cause them to lose their livelihood. I'd love to see the terms of the "voluntary relinquishment".

The claims have been there for 40 some years. 3 years ago they were put inside of a wilderness area (by about 100-200 yards as the road into the river crossing is a corridor through the wilderness area and the claims are not very far from the road) A little more than a year later the owners were advised that the performance bond was going to be re-evaluated. The standing performance bond at the time was $2000. They had a meeting with all the claim owners (excluding one)and told them that since it was now in a wilderness area that the cost for the government to reclaim it, should anyone default, was going to go up. They increased the performance bond from $2,000 to $140,000 and the owners had 30 days to come up with the money or forfeit their claims. One owner is still fighting it (the one who was excluded), haven't heard from him in a while though.

Unless something has changed $140,000 bond should cost $1,400.
You can still drive the road??

Unless something has changed $140,000 bond should cost $1,400. You can still drive the road?? No you pay the govt $140,000 which they hold in escrow until you complete your reclamation, then if you complete it satisfactorily it is returned to you, if it is not completed satisfactorily then it is forfeited. You can still drive the road down to the river, it is a corridor through the wilderness area. It is in the top 5 worst roads I have ever driven, last time I was in there I had to buy a new set of tires when I got home because I lost so many chunks of rubber the tires were unsafe even though they still had plenty of tread on them. Well.. I hope this is helpful. That is not a bond. AKA Surety bond. That is a security deposit. $140,000 bond is an insurance policy that pays in the event the criteria are not met. The cost of the bond is generally 10% and is paid in full at the beginning of a one year term. It is common to utilize this device "in lieu of deposit". They could call this the cost of doing business. To avoid having to tie up $140K they almost certainly could buy a bond in lieu of deposit. Perhaps these gentlemen did not understand the difference?

Yeah, I think it awfully hypocritical for the BLM to come out with a smarmy video after they bushwhacked the miners so blatantly. It IS a nice vid, though. Tony - If you can still drive the road, can you poke around and look for any scraps the miners may have missed? Rick (cyborgsam @ ebay)

What, exactly, is the "reclaimation" the BLM wanted them to do? Rick

Which Wilderness Area is this in? Only Congress can designate a wilderness area. So unless it was passed by Congress, which you can find out on-line, it aint Wilderness Area. BLM would like to think it might be or call it that, but thats just what they would like to see. They also dont have the Right to Shut down any road Going thru these areas that was there before 1972. Even though they would like to think they can do this as well.

Unless something has changed $140,000 bond should cost $1,400. You can still drive the road?? Scott if it's 10% of the Bond value it would $14,000 on $140,000 not $1400. Huge Difference in price. Cause I am sure they would be more than willing to even pay $1400 to keep their Claim open.
