These are some fine pyrite ammonite casts from Germany similar to the British ones Don posted. They're also Jurassic (about 170 million years old) and form perfect little metal ammonite replicas inside limestone concretions. I came across a German dealer offering them at Quartzsite several years ago. He explained that the concretions are carefully split open to reveal near-perfect casts of pyrite that's filled the mold in stone left by the completely decayed and vanished animals. The casts and molds are gently wire-brushed to bring out the natural color. The dealer identified this type as Pleuroceras/species Lias delta (Pliensbachium.) I couldn't resist buying several as display pieces.
