Closed, they look like meringue puffs.
Cactus? are so strange. From a stickery plant come beautiful and interesting blossoms
@shotgunner. I'd rather call it aroma vision or scentivision. Not smelly vision!!!

Pat, that's awsesome! scentivision! ha! You are terrific. They are succulents. An African (Saharan) species. Succulents can be thorny. No bees in the Sahara, these are pollinated by flies. I think it is rare to see these without flies or at least fly eggs in the stamens of the flowers. These seem pristine (so far anyway!) and I do not believe I have ever seen that. Brian you da man!

Seems logical that something pollinated by flies would smell.
Nevertheless , interesting. What an education on a rock board:)

My Mother in Law grows that smelly thing just to irritate me. It is epitome of smell vision.

Great pics, Brian! I didn't get any stapelia flowers this year , plant must not have gotten enough water. For those that missed it, I posted a couple pics on Brian's thread last year Stapelia.

Thanks all! Jean I forgot about that monster bud you had last year, too cool!! Jimp I suggest filling your green houses with stapelia. They would be the perfect companion plants for your bug eaters

Or you could just drag home some dead animals, same effect. But first, you'd have to be able to live with the stench.

Probably was at its prime the day before. They are some big ones! Two days later, it is all shriveled. But two more buds getting ready!

Scott, I was watering the plants when I saw the open bloom. Do not confuse dirty feet with those that need a pedicure. Care to compare at the Cady fieldtrip?
