Mel to save you some grief when using windows 8, if you want any program just hit the Windows key on the bottom left of your keyboard and start typing the name of the program you want.
If you are coming from Windows XP the start > [type program name] is one that will smooth the transition. This was also in Win 7 so if you are used to that it will be familiar.

Mel If you still have that computer, get a new hard drive for it. Toss the old drive. Then you can put windows 7 in the new drive and put all the old filed on it from your backup stick. As for windows 8, I hate it. Wish I could go back to XP.

Hey Ed, If you are talking about the live cd it is Linux, there are a number of different ones. I use one called Knoppix mostly but you can use Ubuntu etc.
Mel, Given that the applications on the hard drive are now unlicensed it would be a good time to just install Ubuntu alongside the stuff that's there and you could at least access your files. It is different than Windows but not bad and at least you could still use the computet and access the files locally.

Here’s how I ended up with Win 8 I built a new computer this summer ASUS motherboard-- new SATA hard drive. The works/ I had my full install of Windows XP That's was what was running on my old machine I wanted to load XP on the new machine But no! I got the blue screen of death! When trying to load XP I tried every BIOS tweak you can imagine I figured (and was even told) that the SATA drive might be the problem But all informed minds figured it would eventually load No Go ! So what to do? Figuring it was new machine=== old XP problem I bought the OEM version of Windows 8 $150.00 ! UUGHHH! But heck I figured I’d have to upgrade to Win 8 eventually And it was definitely going to load. No problem! Wrong! Blue screen of death! Now I’m really screwed. So I thought it was too much-- or the RAM-- chips weren’t right. I messed around with that. Got frustrated and shot the machine! Well shot it down to Fry’s Electronics. What was the problem? The motherboard was bad! They exchanged it out and loaded my Win 8 all under warranty work I lucked out there --cause I built the machine Mostly

If you don't like windows 8, the computer tech can set it up to look and work pretty much like windows 7. That's what we did and it works fine. We do have recovery disks for both he windows 8 rigs.
Phoenix, by the time we added up the costs for labor, a new microsoft program, a new anti virus etc etc plus the clean up. The price was only a little less than a whole new computer and the new computers are much faster and have way more memory, so that's what the wife wanted me to buy to atone for my sin of stupidity *L*. Been married a long time. Easier around to just agree.....Mel

Ed if you have a windows 7 or older machine you can get a Windows installer that will help you get Ubuntu running. It is pretty easy as long as you are willing to assume a little risk on a Windows machine. Here is a version I've successfully installed with Windows: www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/install-ubuntu-with-windows

Yes, mel. I call that the path of least resistance. No matter which way you go it's painful. So take the path of least resistance. It's a winner every time.
Sucks that people have to be like the ones that effed up your machine. Evil like that makes me hope Karma is real.

Ed *L* Yep, ten years or until you pull a Mel ( synonym: astronomically stupid f**k up) *L*......Mel LOL! Can I say I told you so:)? Just think of all the other areas this thought may apply... Seriously, you did the right thing updating the computer because the new ones are so much faster. As for the old one... the only thing that's destroyed is the hard drive right? I hate to say this... but a new hard drive is about $50 these days, so I would not throw that system out, I'd buy a new hard drive (4 screws and a plug to replace it, just take the old one in to make sure you get the right connectors) and reinstall your original windows. Once it's working well (the KEY here is that you are installing your drivers for the other components in the computer... I suspect that what your vandal did was wreck your other drivers), shut it down and put in a plastic bag in the closet for emergencies. Next time that happens, Mel, email me. I may not always be able to help, but I can give you good advice and don't need to take over your computer to do it.

Helen *L* Thank you for your offer but you've just been soooo wrong about sooooo much for sooooo long *L*. I think I'll leave computer repairs to the experts from now on, just like we should do with the presidency. No more know nothing, incompetent, amateurs *L*.....Mel

Right, and your ability to pick 'experts' ranks right up there with your opinion of the Presidency:). But don't let your recent experience teach you any lessons about your sense of judgement or anything:P.

Helen: G. F. Y. I fell for a trap set by a clever gulldanged liar just like you, your political party and your Prez. I'm old and not from the computer generation so these machines are like magic to me. What's your excuse for your stupidity? *L* And peddle your koolaid to those that don't know ya. Most of us already know you blindly follow the worst lying sack of doody this country has ever seen....Mel
