Most scientists believe that our universe began with just hydrogen and a little helium, but even those two are complex! As hydrogen heats up, it's electrons are forced by an expanding "forbidden Zone" into ever larger and more bizarre orbits. This allows hydrogen to connect to other elements in many wondrous (look at snowflakes!) ways.
Sorry, but any reference to hydrogen makes me think of this: “There is more stupidity than hydrogen in the universe, and it has a longer shelf life.” “Some scientists claim that hydrogen, because it is so plentiful, is the basic building block of the universe. I dispute that. I say there is more stupidity than hydrogen, and that is the basic building block of the universe.” - Frank Zappa
(They never taught THAT in chemistry) 😂 Seriously, though... very informative. Wish I had a chemistry lab set up at home to do some of these tests. Flame tests are fun. Two more thoughts on acids and bases: strong vs. weak can be just as important as concentrated vs. dilute. Strong acids and bases dissociate completely, making all the H+ or OH- available to react. Weak ones release the ions gradually, and buffer the solution at a given pH (at or near the pKa, or dissociation constant). Second, baking soda will neutralize both acids and bases.

We have a lot of burnt smelling rocks here, I think they are precambrian basalt. We also have rocks that have iridescent minerals with a uv light. Another tip is get you get it wet, to see if limestone has fossils, Also, I have been able to test it but to tell jade from olivine or is it serpentine aside from weight, it sounds different, but you have to cut it to see if light passes through or translucency. I don't know all about jade there are so many types, grades, they also test with uv light.
