How did we survive? You mean before seat belts or baby seats? You mean when kids walked to school? Or rode bikes without helmets? Or had bonfires on the beach at night?Or burned metal stemmed sparklers (even in 1968 we weren't allowed firecrackers in Cali) on the fourth of July? Or did you mean way back when our parents did not get arrested for allowing us to go to the pizza parlor ALONE?................................................................................ I could go on. Our society has become ridiculous. Sad really. Kids can't just be kids anymore.

I love that car. I had a convertable baja 72 model w/88mm jugs and weber carb. That is over the top car. Frogtownman. It was a decent ride, except I always had to sit in the back, sideways. Chuck's Ghia was a hard top, in a shittier shade of blue (proper use of curse word, I am sure). When he decided to 'detail' it he decided to put in new carpet, leftover from the recent home renovation. We took out the seats and underneath we found a few dollars and some coupons for gasoline. Gold was $180 an ounce and that would buy a fella a fine tailored suit. Today an ounce of gold buys the same tailored suit (maybe not quite, price is low) and gasoline is approximately 1.5x that old price (adjusted against the against the price of gold).

Damn bunch of kids. Collected soda and beer bottles, delivered papers and mowed lawns for spending money. Cherry bombs were still legal. With the water proof fuse they played hell with the school plumbing when flushed down the toilet. First car was a 28 Ford Sport Coupe. Never heard of skateboards. Gas wars were on between gas stations. 14 cent a gallon gas, and S&H Green Stamps with each purchase. Got my first camera with Green Stamps. 10 cent bottles of soda. (I can remember 5 cent soda). Cut my drag racing teeth in the late 50's at the Colton Drag Strip, (Morrow Airport). Was at the Riverside Raceway for the first race held there. This was all in Southern California.
Before that it was south of Cleveland,Ohio. WWII was winding down. The neighbor kid and I hiked for miles with our wagons collecting scrap metal. Once a week a horse drawn wagon came down our street buying scrap metal to be melted down for the war effort. We'd sell our metal and hike the mile down to the local gas station / bar / country market and buy as much penny candy as we could. In season we picked wild strawberries and black berries to sell by the side of the road. Caught fish, turtles and frogs at the local pond. Many a good meal out of those critters.

The best times of my life when i was struggling along. Stayed active and engaged. Getting into new stuff and meeting new people. Just getting a bunch of different part time jobs led to incredible experiences. It was'nt even work to me half the time.
