thats a sweet piece of coral. The pattern looks like it is popping out in the red area through the buttescotch. These polished coral pieces look even nicer in hand than pics.I can vouche for that. kinda looks like a flesh eating virus also. Only on this forum could comparing a product's look and color to flesh eating virus be a compliment. lol

Petrified coraliferous veneralitis. It is very contagious. ha. Jimmy Buffet has it. Makes him fin to the left and fin to the right .
Of all the coral i collect these baby whole corals are my favorite. Both of those you showed pics of were as found. No hammering.

I think all of the good adjectives to describe this have already been used. So let me just say, you've got some purdy coral there, James.

Cooked a load of coral. White marks on temp gauge are 'temp ramp points'. Needle is tweaked from going past it's limit. Peak marks at 3:00 and 4:00 are about 575 and 625F. Opened the oven yesterday at peak temp and heard a loud crack. Betting one of the big chunks popped in half. Turned of at 6:00PM yesterwednesday. May be cool down at lunch todaythurs. The big pieces will most likely split once or twice. But have plenty of unfractured material. The stuff in the sand heats and cools much slower way reducing splitting. Heating wet material has become interesting in that it gives crackled effect. Will tumble some of that. Should easily hold up to cabbing too.

Interesting show, thanks. Anxious to see what the "heated wet" looks like all shined up. Larry

I cleaned out the 25 pound barrel yesterday. The heat treated stuff was rounded and removed for 220 step. The not heated stuff got moved to a 15 pound barrel to grind more.
The heat works in good ways by adding color and softening the stone.
Nothing like wet stone though. It brings out better colors than any polish i have ever achieved.

what color were the glasses? Were they brown before heat treatment. Looks like they ended up nice red.

bhiatt - It seems they started silver - then went green black after pre-bake, Jim wasn't happy with that so he finished then at full temp to get red.

It's amazing what the heating does to the enhance the colors. James, when you open the oven at peak temperature, are you not worried about something flying out of the oven and hitting you? On your next camping trip throw a piece of coral in the fire. It divides like nuclear fission. 1 2 4 8 16 ........Jean. An acetylene torch turns it into a splinter shooting machine. Shooting hundreds of splinters quickly. Really got to wear protective eye wear. And do not get them in your clothes! Usually those WHOLE corals just go THUMP! They like to be heated up slow and down slow. But more chance of splitting from moisture. Then the door is closed.
