This stuff surprised me. This creek is loaded w/garnets in schist and felspar. The felspar is boulder size though. Just down stream is a gorge called garnet hill. Lots of heat and lots of pressure. Our rocky mountains got worn away so we southerners live closer to the down under. Lots of igneous stuff around here. The thicker the quartzite plates(ave. 1-8 inches) the better the quality got. It is dense and hard. Was here for just a couple of hours. When i get out in the creek(during warm weather) i will greatly increase what can be picked from. A paved trail runs along this(Rottenwood Creek) for several miles. I did not step out in the water do to the cold. Very little was collectable on the shore. It is easy to find due to it's hardness making it maintain very square edged plates. The clear piece rang like glass bell. We find fine spearheads made out of it. And call it sugar quartz. Points out of the clear stuff are highly prized. I have never found such a clear piece of fracture free quartzite and am looking forward to going during warm season. The site is in NW Atlanta. I will tumble the 5-6 pounds i bought home. And i have a lot of trail access below garnet ridge where i will bet even better material will be. I am pumped about this stuff.

I find chips and broken/whole artifacts out of the high grade stuff occasionally Scott.
Finally found some of the clear stuff(their stash). And if you cut at 90 degrees (with the layers) i think you will see the top
of the specs instead of a side view of them. That was a hostile and quick trip. Got do that one during river rat season. I thought about you at the counter top shop. Thinking that you see those pretty
quartzite tiles in the tile business.

Neat looking rough. Is that 85, 75, or 285?

That is looking south Rich. Bridge 1 is the ramp from 285 to 75. The 2nd bridge is west 285. The 3rd bridge is east 285. The 4th bridge is Akers Mill. I think that's the way it is. And 75 is to the right running parallel to the creek. A bunch of bridge pilings. It is easy to get to and cool short walks to many sections along Rottenwood Creek. South of Akers Mill bridge it turns into Chattahoochee National Park. They may say something about collecting. The stretch of garnets is just in the park and was in old books as a garnet spot. It was totally woods when we used to go romp in there in high school.

That creek is full of hornblende?, gneiss, granites, schists, fractured crystalline quartz, quartzite and many grainy rocks glued together like petrified spices.
Finding that unfractured clear quartzite is a bit of a trophy for this area Larry. But more grainy versions w/cool colors can be common. Been looking for a source of the clear stuff.

Let's go there some time Kevin. We don't have to tell our wives about the purdy joggers.

a tad changed from "Way out in the Boonies" from your youth.
Some of that quartzite looks like graphic granite! Neat stuff.
I think you are going to have a fun spring fling!

I will pursue felspar when i can get out in the water Dave. Warmer weather. Lest i go further down stream and find it. depends on available gravel bars...

lol That might make a great present for my wife! You would freak if you saw it. Stout sucker. Made out of stop sign aluminum about 8 x8 or 10 x 10. LOL about thinking about your wife. I am really a male pig when it comes to stuff like that. Life is good.

At least take a pic of it and send it my way if you see it again. I'll put it as our desktop background and not tell her anything...see what she says? HA
