Hi folks! Haven't been out on a rock hounding adventure since September (gasp) and today was the day! We woke up early, Christa put us together some yummy sammiches, stopped for gas and ice and headed out to an area we hadn't been to for several years west of the valley. After a long bumpy ride through the desert stopped and took this pic. Almost there, moon going down and sun coming up behind us. Still in the shadow of the mountains behind us, temp was 37 (later warming up to 73).
A bit later we're there! Took this pic that I think is rather postcard worthy
The agate field here is a rather small occurance. I have always wondered if it picked up again on the other side of the hills so I spent the first hour or so on a very brisk hike over all the surrounding hills looking for signs. Not even a single chip of jasper to found out of this area! As I was off looking Christa took some pics
When I returned Christa showed me something she had found. It was a small transmitor looking thing that had been tethered to a balloon and fallen out of the sky here. I wanted to pick it up but she said "no wait it could be a bomb!" lol. Well as I didn't want to get blowed up we just took pictures and left it alone. Maybe a weather thing?
the balloon remnants next to it
So we spent the rest of the day collecting rocks. Like I said we hadn't been to this location for years, and rains and flooding since had exposed some nice stuff. We filled our bags and a bucket, had a great lunch, and headed back home. What a wonderful trip it was!
We got back late this afternoon, I didn't have time or energy to set up a a tailgate shot. Just dug through the bags to show a sample of what we found. Found a few druze/crystal geode nodules that I need to clean up
Jasper typical of the area
Moss Agate
pretty piece
neat piece showing half moss and half agate
moss side
head on
some nodules
Plumes
Thanks for checking out our trip and finds! I'll be doing some cutting come morning.. hoping to have some sweet pics to show you then
