hi all, i just wanted to make my first post an introduction. i was introduced to rock hounding earlier this year and it has quickly become something im really into. particularly, hunting the lesser known So. Cal agates from the Agoura/Malibu and Acton areas.
i stumbled onto this site while researching tile saws for rock cutting and decided to register and say hello.

Hi Brandon, welcome from Camarillo. Please post images of agates from some of the areas you mention -- they're in my neighborhood too. Given the volcanic geology here there should be plenty of fine material if access is available and deposits don't already have houses on them.

Hello, Brandon, welcome from this member also in sunny southern California! I'm a bit further south (near San Diego), about ten miles from the Mexican border.
Looks like the bug bit you hard. Playing with rocks will keep you out of trouble, but expect the finishing aspect to drain your wallet! Jean

Brandon, there's a bunch of us Californians on here! You'll come to know and love us all, lol.
While the area around Ocotillo does have some nice rocks, I've found the pickings are better about 30 miles to the north near Ocotillo Wells. Lot of cools stuff out there. The main reason we used to go to the desert was to do some off-roading - quads, 4 wheeling in the urban assault machine. Now when we go, hounding rocks has become the priority!
Agreed, we have some great areas to collect, feel sorry for those that have to travel to find good rocks!

Welcome Brandon. I lived in Ojai till a few years ago and used to have ranches and farms in Camarillo, Thousand Oaks etc as my district. Was in the Ventura gem club for years. You need to make contact with my buddy, Lowell ( elementary) here in the group. He hunts all the same areas you do and lives in Ventura.....Mel

Brandon, The Ventura Gem and Mineral Society is a great club. Good folks, a really big, good show each year with a great silent auction (I'm biased as that's the booth I used to work each year *L*) They also have a lot of knowledge available which they are happy to share and a cool shop and clubhouse at a pretty park if they still have it....Mel

Welcome! My boys and I did some rockhounding up in the Acton area. Fun place. We're in SoCal as well ... maybe we'll run across each other! Paul

hi Paul, i read your trip report for Acton. i go there mainly for the agate nodules. its not a bad place to collect if you know where to look and its not too far from the city either which is a plus.

You all threw me off with the mention of hounding in Acton. I worked in a branch of the British Museum of Natural History (as a temporary visitor) at the East Acton (in London) Ocean Bottoms Laboratory. I was there to study about 100 giant tortoise specimens from Galapagos, but the primary focus of the lab was all of the core samples from ocean drilling surveys (related to off shore oil one presumes). The tortoises and I were there just to get us out of the way of the "rest of the musuem". So yes there is geology to be had in Acton, CA and East Acton, London, UK. The tortoises have moved but I'll bet the ocean cores are still there. Tom
