Hi, Ed!! Yes, the Covington is a belt-driven machine. It speeds up or slows down when you pull the speed control when the machine is running. Here's a pic of the canvas belts from Arrowhead Lapidary Supply's website. They aren't very expensive either. They are kinda flimsy (flip-floppish), flexible? I could not find the sc belts for the drum over 12k so decided to try the canvas belts. The diamond belts are expensive. photo source: Arrowhead Lapidary Supply

I've got one of those belts I use 8000 diamond paste on it
is that the size of the belt that difficult to put on and off? what is this bump wheel that was mentioned?
another question: what grits are the 2 hard wheels? 80 & 120 ?
after the hard wheels-- you use belts? what's the next grade of belt (grit) do you use ? after the hard wheels?
What type of belts are those?
Certainly not a canvas belt with 320-grit paste on it? Or maybe it is …. Thanks Ed

Pretty cool that you use the 8k paste on the belt, Ed. I haven't tried the 8k grit.
The bump wheel is what some call the lever lock drum.
The Covington came equipped with the 100 and 220 grit diamond wheels, 400 and 12k diamond belts that I have not used yet. I use the 325 and 600 silicon carbide belts. On the resin belts, I use 12k, 14k and 50k. I need to purchase some 3k diamond paste to use, so it would be used after the 12k. Sometimes, I'll skip 14k.

Jan, they were calling them bump wheels way back in the 50's. Every time the wheel comes around to the split in the drum, you can feel it bump your cab. Some had the lever, and some were made with a big offset bolt with a slot in it. Seems like every manufacturer had their own version.

Thanks, Don! I just found out what a lever lock drum was when I looked at miander's machine. That's interesting that they used a bolt that fit into a slot with some drums. The only one I can find now after a google search is made by Covington.

Jan, I have 3 of them. A 6" and 2 - 8". I think they're all different makes. I'm gonna soda blast them to bare metal and put them on the shelf with other vintage equipment and supplies I have.

I kinda like the versatility of the bump wheels, especially after scoring a big box of varied grit rolls for ten bucks.
