I use a mixture of boric acid in denatured alcohol for a fire coat. Put a bit more boric acid than will dissolve in the denatured alcohol. Paint or dip your piece in the solution and then burn it off. It should make a white coating on your piece and help hold things in place. Comes right off in the pickle. When making a bezel flux the edge of the bezel strip. Dip or paint the back plate in the fire coat dip the bezel strip in the fire coat and position the strip on the plate and burn off the alcohol. Place the solder and solder it up.

With a change in the weather, I have been cabbing as much as possible, but by Fri or Sat I should be able to devote some time to experiments and get back to y'all. I have to figure out what's going on.

You could also make your fire scale flux at home, Pripp's Flux.
1 qt boiling water 120 grams Boric Acid (can be had at a home center-Lowe's ect. as roach powder. check label to be sure its boric acid 80 grams Borax (can be had at the grocery store as twenty mule team borax, or if you live in the NW US pure borax can be gotten from the local bait shop, its used to treat salmon roe for use as bait.) 80 grams Tri Sodium Phosphate (can be gotten at a paint store be sure it is the actual product.
Dissolve everything in the boiling water.
To use dip or brush on the item you are soldering flux your seam and solder as usual.
For further information on Pripps flux just do a web search on "Pripps Flux"

I have never used "Pripps Flux" but it should do the job if used correctly. But I wonder about it's ease of use. There is going to be a lot of moister to boil off and that may or may not be a problem. The "Anti-Oxidant" I use and make from Boric Acid and denatured alcohol in a saturated solution is burned off (after being dipped or brushed on) and your piece is left warm and dry. I then dab a small amount of flux on my piece and solder. Maybe it is what you get use to and what works for you. Don
