That guy had some great material. Did you see any of his finished stuff or did he just collect? Any idea how old the material is?

Major score, Beef!!! Is the first pic of opal Honduran material or Australian black? I think that's a pyrite sun that looks like a sand dollar, and a very large one!! edited--after a second look, maybe it's wood? Wow @ the Bat Cave Jasper, tourmaline, opals, and Siberian jade slab!!

All these amazing rocks for 300! You either pointed a gun to the seller or you hypnotized him!

Thank you very much everyone! panamark There were many polished pieces and a couple trays of cabs, also some silver work the guy had done. I found a 'certificate of award' card in one tray that had his name saying he had completed a course in jewelry dated Sept 1977. Also found a receipt from a rock shop dated 2008. I believe he was at this for quite some time gingerkid after googling I believe Don was correct with the pyrite sun ID, though this one is not brittle. The black opals I_think are Honduran but I'm not sure. I will pull them from the jar and get better pics. Full plate today, prolly tomorrow Thanks again folks!!

Don's right about it being a pyrite sun (from the coal mine in Sparta, IL). Yours may not be brittle (looks like a good one), but don't get it wet or place in a high-humidity area like a kitchen or bathroom, even to clean, or it can quickly become much less stable. Acids from PVC and many other plastics will also get to them even more quickly than metal jewelry and coins (if you must store in/with plastic bags or trays, look for those made of polyester or mylar).

Those are some great finds. Congrats. That guy had some great taste. I'm glad that it will stay in the hands of someone who appreciates it and not thrown in the trash by some idiot. You will make some awesome shiny stuff from all that I bet...with Pictures I hope

Hi Jan, here's the black opals out of the jar. What do you think, Hondurans? Had a hard time getting a good pic but they're flashy and colorful as can be

Definitely Honduran. Sometimes they can yield very nice stones.

Yes, I agree! Definitely looks like Honduran opal. Gorgeous, and can be quite pricey. Again, you scored big-time, Beef!
