SJPatrick I understand the problems with shared shop space and dealing with difficult people. I had a person supervising a shop session who would put a spring clamp on the handle because the saw "wasn't cutting fast enough". I politely let them know that if they wanted to screw with slab saws they should do it with their own saws at home. They said "I quit" (later, when I wasn't there), problem solved. Here's the manual for the LS18 from Lortone. www.lortone.com/pdf/LS18_Part_List.pdfDiagrams on page 4 and 5 are quite helpful.

Your suspicions are correct on the clutch sound too, that is exactly what it is supposed to sound like. The clutch is an intentional safety device, but also a wear item, so it should not be constantly slipping. I will be disassembling the vice carriage on the clubs LS18 over the next few weeks, I will take pics as I figure out how I am going to rebuild it.

SJPatrick, sorry for multiple posts but I just remembered another problem with the LS18, the shut off chain can catch on the edge of the hole it passes through stopping or slowing the feed. I took a piece of mechanics wire and made a ring at one end, attached it to the switch and passed it through the hole in the saw tub, then made a ring at the other end and attached the chain there so the part passing through the hole could not catch.

Lee, Thanks for all the information. I don't mind multiple posts at all. I've been using the LS18 manual a lot to educate myself and when explaining things to others. I've also been using the parts catalog at www.lortone.com/pdf/Lortone_2012_Catalog.pdf . It's a couple years old, but it is sometimes useful to get better descriptions of parts in the LS18 manual, and an idea of what parts will cost. Photos would be great if you can. The manual doesn't show much detail. The shut off chain is rarely used. One guy uses it because he gets distracted making cabs. But there haven't been any premature shut offs due to it catching. And it never gets to auto shut off because there is always somebody waiting to use the saw and when the saw completes the cut they're on top of it. But I'll keep your fix in mind should it happen. Thanks!
