"LadyHawk" carved out of Picasso stone from one of David's mines.
I had the good fortune to meet David l. Penney and his daughter, Desiree D Shotwell at his store (a converted gas station)in Beaver today.
In addition to quality jewelry, they sell rough stones from his mines and carvings made from them.
He, JPRocks and I had a long discussion on mining in the area.
David asked us what we thought was a fair amount of the land in the country to be turned over to mining? 5- 10%?
Actually it is less than 0.03%
And half of that is sand and gravel!
David has Fire Agate, Lucin Varascite, Picasso, Pink Flamingo Stone, White Tiger Stone, and Snowflake Obsidian mines.
At first there was just the claim fee. Then the BLM and state added Bond Fees to assure the area was restored to it's original state when mining ended. As I recall, the fee was in the neighborhood of $1,500, but then it raised to $5,000, $15,000, $30,000.
Multiply that by 10 mines. A LOT of out of pocket money on top of fuel raising from $0.50/Gallon to $4.00/gallon, machinery breakdown, vandalism, . . .
And now potential buyers can't afford to buy the mines from him nor can his children afford to take them over on his death.
Mining is being strangled!

I've always stopped in Beaver to break up the drive from Salt Lake to Vegas or LA. For the first time ever, I walked inside a small shop near McDonald's called "Love the Art."

The owners are kind, knowledgable and dedicated to their work.
You can buy stones, beads, jewelry, and sculptures. I highly recommend this shop to any local or traveler looking for unique, hometown, affordable gifts.

We stopped for the night in Beaver, UT on the way to Zion NP. In the morning we were looking for a cute local place for breakfast before getting back on the road, when I noticed Love the Art had a Yelp deal $5 for $10. We stopped in and were greeted with extremely friendly service.
I ordered a pineapple smoothie and my husband had the blueberry-banana. We were both shocked to learn that they were gluten-free, had no additives, etc. They tasted so good we tried to recreate it in our Vitamix at home...to no avail. We also split an iced frap with vanilla beans...delicious.
The store has awesome gemstones and beads from the area to look around while you wait for your drinks. Definitely stop in here and support this place- you won't be disappointed!

Love the Art is a fantastic place on all fronts. The sculptures are beautiful, the jewelry is unique and the coffee is the best I've ever had...including the best local roasters in NY, LA and Chicago! Everything costs about half of what it should, so it is an incredible place to stop and have a cup of coffee and buy unique gifts for just about everyone on your list!
It's worth a special trip to Beaver for sure!

For a quick stop in the Beaver, come here for coffee or their 100% natural no sugar added smoothies! Haven't tried the smoothies - I wanted some coffee, but the frappe was delicious with a CHEAP price. This business is new for having the drinks available but is totally worth stopping in.

A diamond in the rough on I 15 near Beaver, UT. We just stopped for gas. I was intrigued by the obscure sign about art and dropped in. Amazing hand carved rocks mined in Utah, siphon and drip coffee, and fruit smoothies. We got coffee, smoothies and some rock specimens. Do not miss this stop!
