Ive noticed piles of shells and rocks but never really dug through them yet. I will definitely dig through those piles, now that I have a better idea of what Im looking for. I was surprised of how much I found up on the beach laying high and dry.

You can wade out in tampa Bay, Green Key, Anclote Key with a t-handle steel poker and stick it in the sand to find chert bed rock. then fan the sand off and feel for lose rock. 99.9% of the rock is under sand. acres of pretty chert bed rock on north side of the Ballast Point Pier. it is hard to break chunks off in 5 feet of water. I used a 5 foot wrecking bar and knocked chunks off. loaded with old bottles too. you are lucky to be in that area.

do you know of anything further up north towards weeki wachee? One of these days Ill try to get out to Anclote. I think people would look at me like I was crazy but it's just a different type of fishing, only it's not fishing.

Green Key is about 20 miles south. Park at the Cul De Sac and walk along the beach to the western most point. wade out 100 feet in the knee deep water and chert and pet silt is everywhere. Sometimes exposed on the shore. I found occasional coral. Rock sticking up at low tide out in the water.

I'll have to give that place a try someday. All the beaches around here are fairly shallow which makes rockhounding alot easier for me on the water. I need to be able to cool off when I get hot or walking becomes a problem.

well done, glad you got a saw. I don't know about the AFB. The beaches from Tampa up to Weeki should all be good to hunt. The bay is known for fine rocks.

Thanks, that's good to know. I'll still check out the beach at the base. Since it sits on southern most tip of an peninsula in the bay, you would think there's a good possibility of finding something worthwhile that has washed up. Another plus is that its not open to the public and picked over. If I find just a few nice stones, that would be nice.
