Those tropicals should be able to take the heat. if sitting on hot concrete it may be a problem. Lilies easier in bigger spaces. They have plant claustrophobia. Will be glad when the days get shorter. Tropical lilies often from equator and thrive off of long days. But very humid. Water lily leaves burning up here, but not killing them. Of course, Death Valley earned it's name for some reason, your weather somewhat similar.

Of course, Death Valley earned it's name for some reason, your weather somewhat similar. No, not on concrete, just dirt, off the east of the patio. Yes, I can understand the lilies wanting bigger spaces, not something available to me here (yet!).
At one point, I had placed the water lilies into the pond for a couple days. Big mistake! They picked up some snails from the pond, which got transferred back into the small 1/2 keg. That's another part of the reason I changed the water - to scrub out the inside of the container, and pick all the snail egg jelly masses off the underside of the leaves. I hope I got most, if not all, of them out. I also found some small (3/8" long) thin, red worms burrowed into the dirty around the lily tuber/knot. They had a fringed appearance, like a bloodworm. I'm guessing the worms may have played a part in the death of the Colorata. Without digging everything up, I rinsed off what I could from around the plants with water.
I'm sure you're right about the leaves dying, but not killing the plants. At the bottom of the containers, it is at least 10 - 15 degrees cooler than the water at the surface. But I'll feel better about their survival when we are done with all this heat!

[/quote] Dear Jean I think that Pat, out of love, just gave you a hint. Your motto "It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others." is befitting. I may be mistaken, but I think that is what she wanted you to think about. I am certainly entertained by your efforts. And greatly appreciate them. But not for gain, just for camaraderie. I was hoping that the plants I send thrive and provide pleasure to you guys. But am amused at the efforts(failures . I was curious where that quote came from; it looked familiar. Then remembered it is at the bottom of your posts. And started ROFL. Sorry, but true.

It was a toss up between that and "I am the one your mother warned you about." Decided to go with the first. I like that it is ambiguous, and open to interpretation.
Well of course I know that it is befitting, that's why I used it. Truth be told, I think it gives everyone else something to think about, lol.
James, I am glad that you are so easily entertained, and that I am able to oblige you effortlessly with one hand tied behind my back.

jamesp No, no no! I was not giving Jean a hint! She doesn't need any hints from me! I gladly stand corrected. Jean does amuse me. But I can not trick her, for long anyway. Usually a step ahead. I often try though.

But of course! They know how to grow them out here in California! Perhaps a gender phenomena ? Or is it a geographical phenomena ? Asking nicely...

How 'bout if I answer nicely? Let's go with geographical, since that was my original intent.
(There, that wasn't so bad, was it?)

Ya think ? Wife always watches 'Deadly Women'. Always cutting a smile at me. I look at her and the TV and have formed some opinions.

James, don't lump all of the fairer sex into one basket. We are all very much different!
There are no sitcoms on TV that appeal to me. More into nature and documentary shows, if I watch at all.
