I dont know what kind of music your into, but if you at all like the Greatful Dead then you have to check out Mr.Blotto - do Dead cover but plenty of their own stuff too. They play tomorrow, Tuesday night, at REGGIES MUSIC JOINT 2105 South State Street,Chicago, IL (312) 949-0120. Cheers! Dang that does sound like fun and right up my alley but I'm flying home tomorrow night immediately after a busy day. I've been to Chicago for business twice now and haven't gotten to explore the city either time.

yeah, what Rick said!! It appears modern lapidary started in Germany...... follow his lead. If you free-associate a little it seems logical to me that the gem-mining Seven Dwarves of "Snow White" fame, written by the German Brothers Grimm, were probably based on Idar-Oberstein's famous Medieval Steinkaulenburg gemstone mines at Idar-Oberstein. The mines were eventually depleted and it wasn't until German immigrants to Brazil started sending home enormous amounts of Brazilian agates as ship ballast that the I/O agate-cutting heritage was renewed. Since the Brazilian agates weren't nearly as colorful as the original German agates the local craftsmen learned how to dye them and for a century or more dominated the world's supply. German carvers and craftsmen have no peer. Here are a couple of examples:

Not the best comparison, but that red toad is a near exact match to one in nature. The Indonesian forest toad Bufo melanistictus. My image is in a different pose, but I think you can see the textures and features that make the example adequate. I hope Tommy goes. Tommy, you are welcome. yeah, what Rick said!! Interestingly Snow White's Castle is modelled after the Löwenburg Castle in Kassel, Hesse, Germany. This castle features the first man made water fountain. It dates back to well before electricity. The castle is on a hill and at the top is a large pond. They put underground plumbing down the hill to another pond. When they opened the valve the water would shoot down the plumbing and up into the air over the lower level opening. It still works and they still use it, on sundays during the summer. I missed it. Did not get to see it.

I'm jealous of the rockhounding opportunities. Every show I watch now I think about the rocks in the different places. Was watching Bear Grylls last night and he found a crystal cave in Scotland. Have fun!

Dude, you're going to love Switzerland! My grandparents are from a little town called Entschwil and it's impossibly beautiful. I go back every other year or so and I never get tired of it. Munich's cool too. Give us a full trip report when you get back!

I got a package in the mail today from Tommy and it was the most Christmasy moment I've had in a long time. This guy went above and beyond. Sure hope you enjoy the trip. What a shame we don't get to see new work from you for a bit, but I'm excited for your return.

Thanks for the kind words and advice everyone. Internet has been very spotty but trust me we have a lot to post about when we get back. Spent three days in the Idar-Oberstein area searching little shops and other less obvious places for german agates with pretty good success. If we get them thru customs ... haha.
Back in Bavaria spending time with Eva's mommy and so many other places to see around here. Headed home next Wednesday and once settled in multiple trip reports to follow :-)
