So we hit Nethers Farm for Flintridge flint wide open today!!!
Left Walmart where we overnited in the rain this mornin which quickly turned to sleet. Then just before Nethers Farm it snowed!
Not a problem to us crazy rockhound tho. We got there and as I say " Ya ain't gotta be good if ur lucky"!!!
Ed Moreland and his sidekick were there with a backhoe ripping a fantastic seam out of the ground about 10 feet deep. They invited us to come down in the pit with them and help ourselves! Like I said.....LUCKY!!!! Ed is a Knapp er and has a website, Flintridgerockbreaker@yahoo.com
He heat treats his. He showed us the good stuff.... striped, yellow mustard and red like mookaite and red and black plus other cool colors. Knappers don't like that stuff much so they kept throwing pieces to me#!!
Pics to follow tomoro when I post to my blog. We got 65 pounds and it's great stuff. Met Mrs Nethers too!
Ed wants a big hunk of Davis Creek obsidian to knapp. Uh huh I know where to get that.... yep our own Tony/ catmandew!!!
I promised to send him a hunk in the mail from Tony!
Gotta go eat supper now.
Susan loved it too!

Same thing happens on the coral rivers orrum, the knappers pile their knapping corals in stashes in the river. Segregating the good and the bad. I go through the bad to get color that does not knap so well. It is grainier. Sounds like you are on a dream trip. Be careful and travel safe.

Thanks James it's the second one. I went on my Great Western Trip number one this spring. This time will be better cause lovely Susan will be with me! if you start to get cold later in the winter Lake Falcon at Zapata Texas will be waiting. Average 10 day forecast is 71F for the low and 92F for the high. Come January it should be spot on for comfortable temps. I know of 6 miles of rarely traveled public road that is paved with Rio Grande agate/wood. Mined on site right there from the Rio Grande gravel deposits. PM me if interested. May head out there myself as the Atlanta winter sets in.

Hey Stone sounds like you had a great 18 state trip! You're very fortunate to be able to explore a bit more of the area.. our trip wasn't so rewarding thou we both enjoyed the ride.. we never had a chance to breath let alone search for anything.. Maybe next year we'll alter our plans to camp and include a few stops along the way. So I doubt we'll do the 21 states thing next year, unless we rent a car. safe travels..

Hello everybody! Susan and I with the faithful rockhound Sadie have made it to Rapid City/ Box Elder South Dakota. We hounded Crawford Nebraska Agate beds and got some interesting agates and two "signers". The locals call a agate with signs of a possible internal Fairburn a signer. So really no joy except yes I found a Nebraska Blue agate by accident when I was trying to break another rock with it and a small chip flew off revealing my blue agate!!!
Went to the Crawford Rock Shop and bought two Fairburns for $3.00 each. Pictures of the Agate Beds and my Fairburns are on my blog at oneleggedcowboy.wordpress.com
We then went to Fairburn South Dakota and camped a couple days at French Creek Campground and hounded the Agate Beds there. No joy again but met a wonderful lady named Vicky that is a serious Fairburn hound!!! She talked to us for hours about what to look for and I gave her some Nethers farm flint and she gave us each a small Fairburn!!! Also a bag of classic exterior looking Fairburns with no pattern so we better know what to look for. Such as the burnt holes look or frog back etc.
Moving on to Lovell Wyoming later this week to look at wild Mustangs and maybe rockhound some. The Bighorn River. There is Dryhead float there but it's off limits on the park land. Need to send Tony/catmandew a message to get lined up to go hounding with him.
I think I found a cantaloupe sized jade round rock laying beside our campsite in the commercial campground here. It's heavy and green, real green! It's in my truck now. Supposed to be lots of good stuff in landscaping here since it comes out of gravel and rock pits on the Cheyenne River. Fairburns too!
