Thought I would give this a try. Am about done with the 1000 and have a decent shine. In a rotary. Running each step 5-6 days. If the 14,000 is real shiny I may try the 50,000 to see if there is a difference. For several years I have gone from 500 to 14,000 and been satisfied. Just thought this would be a good test. I see a slight graininess or back ground frost in the 500 to 14,000 jump. all grit is aluminum oxide. The coral is hard and polishes readily. Running with 10 cups of sugar for each polish. this stone done in 500 and then jumped to 14,000.

that reflection is the trees off the deck in winter. Probably clouds behind the leafless trees Ed. House sit in the woods w/some giganticus trees. Messy but shady.

I can't see why you wouldn't get a better shine on the coral using 500,1000,5000 and 14,000 James.
The average "Joe" wouldn't notice a difference though! LOL Good luck,,,, connrock

LOL Good luck,,,, connrock No. You are so right, and there may be no difference. There is most likely a point of diminishing returns. But I gotta see what happens. I will say that AO 500 has never given a polish even after 14 days in the rotary. That I have done several times. Day 3 in AO 1000 started a slight sign of polish, but by day 6 is better for sure. But far from your Lot-O polish. Will clean out and go to AO 5000 today. Predicting a darn good polish in 2-3 days from the 5000. Just looking at when each step becomes ineffective. Proved that the AO 1000 was far better at day 6 than day 3. And it would not surprise me if the 1000 was run a full 2 weeks that wet shine may be approached. I have noticed that skipping from 500 to 14,000 the polish continues to improve past 14 days. And even at that I still see a little haze in the final polish. So the intermediate step of 1000 or 5000. Or maybe eliminating the 14,000 step if the 5000 gives the wet polish if run long enough. Or the 1000 for that matter. The barrel holds about 25 pounds so it is worth extra steps with so much rock.

What is the "grit" of dissolved sugar? Or, does sugar dissolve to nothingness? If it dissolves to nothing, how does it make the slurry thicker?

What is the "grit" of dissolved sugar? Or, does sugar dissolve to nothingness? If it dissolves to nothing, how does it make the slurry thicker? It has no particles, it just makes syrup. If you dove into a pool of Aunt Jemimma's syrup it would probably break your neck. Imagine that And it makes the water heavy, to instantly float the the grit particles. and it is slick for lub. But it is not abrasive, more like motor oil. Just easier to wash off.

Very nice shine for "pre-polish". Fun to play around with something new, yes?

10 CUPS of sugar?? That must quickly become thick as honey.................
The secret is out.
Do you add borax to kill organisms that may feed on sugar? or syrup is thick enough that nothing can grow? That is the secret of honey. Not enough water to support microorganisms.

I have a fine colony of Allegheny Ants in the greenhouse where the tumblers get dumped. They are cultivated around crops as they are a beneficial insect. They are all on a sugar buzz as if on meth. One of them got in my pants and inflicted me this morning. Minimal sting but big chompers.

Concerned about the 5 micron AO from Lortone. It says pre-polish. Part no. 591-021. It does not say the micron size on the label. I had a hard time finding 5 micron. ASI Industries referred me to Lortone and I thank you. I called Lortone twice to verify it is 5 micron. They said yes on 2 occasions. I like to see it on the label. It feels coarser. But it could have sharp edges. It comes in all shapes, aluminum oxide. The perfectly round stuff is used in high precision operations and is overkill for tumbling and way expensive. The Lortone 5000 feels coarser than Rock Shed AO 1000. It has the consistency of talcum powder. So I am mystified... if the rocks get dull from the light 1000 polish they have I will give them my mind.
