Google 'Archimedes corkscrew bryozoa' . I know I've seen your fossil before and I think it may be the corkscrew bryozoa.

There are a lot of ways to seal the fossil...If the fossil is broken in the field,I just wrap them in foil, till I get to my shop, than start piecing it together, after I see that it's complete,I use a glue that hard en's in a few minutes.... Some make a paste, like you have suggested and paint it on and let it soak, getting all the cracks sealed...Its a long process, but it works great too......... Some fossils I trim all the matrix away, some I leave matrix on ( to fragile to remove).. My honest opinion,do as you want on your fossils....... As said always,practice,practice,practice..Thumbs up

Went to Elk River this past weekend and found some fossils not in matrix. The water was really low and we found some "rattler" geodes too. The crystals weren't phenomenal(from the couple I've cut open), but the part around where I cut looks really nice with color. Will need to polish em up before I post. See the star in the middle? Here are the geodes. There were plenty more, but we only got the ones that rattled

Good to find fossils exposed, saves them from natural destruction, and pre-cleaned. Nice finds.

Nice fossil finds, broseph82! The 'rattler' fossils are neat! The "rattlers" are geodes not fossils. I have one that sounds just like a baby rattle. I'll have to polish one up and post in here or cut one open that looks really near inside.

Thanks, Jimi! I haven't ever seen or heard of rattler geodes before! Lookin' forward to seeing them cut.

Years ago, went with a club geode hunting. How you determined if they could be hollow is find a "rattler" first. Then when you pick up one that is not, compare the weight of the two. At least 70 percent of the time it would be hollow. During this one trip, boaters were watching us and there were about 30 or so collectors picking up geodes and shaking them. One boater came up to us and wanted to know what we were doing. Told him and he started laughing. At first he thought we were all from the funny farm out on a field trip ! I got to thinking about and I reckon we did look like "nuts" along the shoreline.
