Hey Tom, If you look at the first pic on page one, the knob at the top is for centering the belt on the wheels. The two knobs below are for setting the tightness of the belt, and quick release for changing belts.
I'd love to find one of these, but would change the motor for a fully enclosed type.

You might want to call Diamond Pacific. They are reported to have a shipping container full of HP parts from when they bought out Contempo Lapidary.

Wouldn't we like to dumpster dive in that shipping container? Tom

The drive roller on this unit should have a layer of 1/4" firm closed cell foam around the drive roller. Without this the belts will slip. I have one of these too and want to fabricate a flat backer to go behind the belt for sanding flats.

Hey Lee, here's an option that HP had in their catalog. They may have made backing plates after the publish date on this catalog. Or this may even be the backing plate. Not sure what they meant by platen plate.

That's the one. I wonder if DP has any in their pile of parts.

I don't think they have any parts for those left. We were talking about them last year and they were wishing they had more of them.

... and they do call them "drums"
I got the Covington wet belt sander a few years ago, and it works OK. Getting the belt tension right is a little tricky. It does have a backer plate. The machine is not too expensive. A full set of diamond belts does take a few bucks.

jakesrocks Thanks for post that Don. I appreciate it. $300 in '69.. Wish i had a time machine, but then i'd have to figure out a way to get all that lapidary equipment back. johnjsgems Thanks John.. I will give them a call and see if they have any old stock drums. Rockoonz Lee can the drum rollers be resurfaced? Mine has the foam backing but its got grooves in it from wear thats why im looking to replace it. my machine actually has the platen plate but it was fabricated by the guy i bought it from. Heres a pic. I also have an original platen plate but it looks nothing the one Don posted. I'll get a pic of that and post it. The guy i got the machine from didnt care for the original so he made this one here.

What is the diameter of the drums ? I'm thinking that you might be able to go to your local tire shop and get an innertube that has been thrown in the trash. Cut rings from the tube and stretch them over your drums. I have an old Covington wet belt sander, and that's what the previous owner used. The only real difference is the Covington drums are a smaller diameter, so he used an innertube from an old balloon tire bike.

What is the diameter of the drums ? It's 8". interesting idea about the innertube.

Another thing worth looking at is the replacement rubber #EX83 for Loretone sanding drums. www.lortone.com/drums.html Scroll down the page a little way to find them.
