This morning I went on a little walk on the trails behind my property to get some fresh air. Haven't done that in a long time. I've walked these trails hundreds of times, but veered of the beaten path this time to a little stream I haven't fully explored and found this nice jade cobble. The water was icy so I didn't fish around in the water for too long, but I was happy to pack this thing back home with me. It's about 14" x 8" and weighs 10-15 lbs or so. Lots of water worn bots on this and what looks like a probable internal bot structure as well. Half of me wants to cut it open, the other half wants to keep it as a specimen. There's some beautiful minty green color showing where the nephrite transitions to the areas of white diopside. Should have taken a photo of the stone wet.

James, I need a new blade so it'll probably stay as is for now. Glenn, Wa jades can be a little funky and sometimes have a different look to them. This example is fairly typical actually. Many of what I find are mixes...nephrite with diopside being the most common. If I ever get to cutting this it would look a lot more familiar to you I think.

Not really knowing anything about jade you mentioned 'water worn bots on this and what looks like a probable internal bot structure". What's a bot?

Even before I asked I had searched the picture you posted for any signs of a botryoidal look to the outside of the cobble, but just couldn't see any. Which is why I asked. I clicked on the MW link just for the heck of it and was surprised when I listened to the pronunciation. What they have is very different from the way I've heard it pronounced here in the south east.

Too funny Ann, the SE may not be the best place to get the correct pronunciation of many words, much less botryoidal. bo- try- oid- al and 3 more added syllables and all is well. It's kap 's fault.

I clicked on the MW link just for the heck of it and was surprised when I listened to the pronunciation. What they have is very different from the way I've heard it pronounced here in the south east. Pronunciation aside the botryoidal areas are nearly completely worn down from water erosion. And the "grapes" are (were) fairly large and not as well defined anyway, nor as interesting, as those specimens not affected by erosion. The end result is what looks like a somewhat lumpy, partially melted ball of candle wax. Haha. What also isn't noticeable from my one lousy picture is a swirling, circular patterned grain at the tops of the bot remnants. It's pretty much a guess until I cut it, but based on other rocks I've cut that look like this, I'm guessing that 'intestinal'-like pattern runs all the way through the stone creating some unusual looking jade slabs. I've got my new blade and hope to break it in tomorrow with this monstrosity!

10-15lbs! Where does it go from being a cobble to a boulder... wow! do take a picture of it wet! what a treasure! Good question! I've always considered a cobble to be a rock that's fist sized or bigger, i.e. takes two hands to comfortably cradle, and doesn't weigh more than what an adult man could easily lift and carry. But what is that based on?! I don't know! Are there strict definitions for these terms? When does a pebble become a cobble become a boulder?? Anyone?

I promised I'd include pictures of the inside of this jade after I cut it, so here's what it looks like. I'm attempting my first ever toki-style pendants and these are the preforms.
