You are doing great, know it all Rockoonz. Another brilliant personal attack. Also you have great knowledge about MSDS sheets. Where is the Zink? There are no MSDS sheets for every use for every chemical. By the way. All the mists from all the above oils used in a rock saw is considered hazardous to your health. You have to use common sense and protect yourself. If you think the Rockhound-Jewelery hobby is completely risk free, think again. I never have used Barranca blades and they have issued good advice. I have not bought a NEW large dia. blade in forty years. In that time I have used almost all of the above coolants in my saws. I sold seven hundred pounds of slabs a couple of years ago and still have a couple hundred laying around. ATF does have considerations for its use in a rock saw but it works well. Use caution. Don

So where's the zinc? 2nd ingredient www.chemcas.com/msds112/cas/2878/68457-79-4_95-63-6_68527-08-2_64742-65-0_61789-87-5.aspWant more? There were dozens. Easy search, since zinc as an anti wear additive is common and well known. Plus, we're talking USED trans oil. Why was the oil drained from the trans in the first place? Internal cooler leak? A little Glycol in the lungs, no problem. Fine copper dust from bronze sprag clutches? Hey , we'll die eventually anyway, why not make it entertaining. Who knows what else they poured in there to get a few more miles out of a toasted transmission. If you want to breathe that stuff, go for it, but if someone listens to you and it ruins their health you will never know, but Mark, the kind fellow who has provided this forum may get sued. It has happened before, took down an auto enthusiast site a few years ago. Oh yeah, sorry you took it personal. Thanks for not sending a stream of threatening PMs like last time.

Well folks it would be nice if a known know it all would could have a debate without personal attacks, innuendos, exaggerations or legal advice.
Again I read through several MSDS concerning ATF and Mineral Oils. You can Google it and do the same. The same warnings are in all the MSDS sheets. ALL mineral oil mists propose a problem if prolonged inhalation. ATF is a mineral oil. In all but one is there a mention of zinc in the MSDS that I read (about 20). The exception was Mobil SHC ATF. This is a synthetic product designed for use in extreme heavy duty cold weather conditions.
Rock saw oils are contaminated with adverse compounds the first time it enters a cut and these contaminates are in the oil mists. I will not further justify my use of ATF as a rock saw cutting oil here in this forum. If you do use it, as with all oils and coolants, use caution.
Oh yeah, Rockoonz, I do take personal attacks here in this forum personal as you do from the tone of your reply. Last time, I decided to protest your personal attack private with a PM and none of it was "threatening". I will take exception.
Misinformation is a terrible thing.

I realize this is a pretty old thread, but still very relevant.
I have found that Lortone's oil will turn a funny shade of green and stink pretty bad as it ages. I don't slab a lot with the saw it is in, and no unusual rocks that might have contaminated it. Rubbing between the fingers, it still has lubricity, so I'm still cutting with it. My saws are in the carport and lean to's, so the mist doesn't linger as much as in an enclosed space. I still set up a strong fan to help disperse the mist though.
Wish I had access to more transformer oil
That reminds me! Back in the 70's and 80's, a number of Mom and Pop rock shops were selling used transformer oil for slab saws. The old stuff was loaded with PCB's that were later found to be a cancer causing agent.

radio Funny you should mention the strange nature of old Lotone oil. I was given several gallon jugs of what was supposed to be Lortone Oil, but when I opened them at home they were about half oil and half rock sludge. When I started filtering the oil I noticed a slightly yellowish/greenish tinge and a definite but subtle automotive oil smell. It may not be Lortone oil, but its in their bottles, but the odor is enough that I probably will try to not mix it with good mineral oil and will try it provisionally because it was free, and I have a new old saw that needs to be filled to prove that its going to work properly. Me I want my oil to not smell like a garage floor.

I can't fathom mineral oil acting this way, but I suppose it could break down over time, or as it becomes loaded with rock snot.
