10 bucks huh? I kinda thought they might be emeralds while at the sale, but wasn't sure. I took all he had of these pieces. Thank you for the ID and the generous offer! Folks at the sale said that he (dead guy) had done quite a bit of hounding in the Carolinas. Had a bunch of kyanite from up there, but it didn't look very nice. Wonder if it could be cleaned up.

nice haul! why don't they ever have sales like that here? It looks like some of that stuff did come from "up north"... was the guy a snowbird?

If that really is a piece of cinnabar I would be careful with it. Heard some nasty stories about a lot of dead Chinese that mined the stuff. My mind won't remember the particulars though. Jim

Agree with Jim. Mercury is somehow related to cinnabar. Very toxic to humans. New Almaden was a Mercury source. Just south of San Jose. Show Mrs. captbob your new beauties, tell her you will make her a piece of jewelry using what she selects. First remove the specimen pieces AND the cinnabar! Hope she sees your collection in a more favorable light! Thanks for the show!

The Admiral needs no reason. Admiral, huh? When did you get the promotion, and more importantly, just what did you do to deserve it?

When we met, I thought I had found my First Mate. Seems she moved up in rank a LOT faster than I did.
The cinnabar has a label on it reading: Cinnabar Quick Silver
Quick Silver = mercury
wonder if I licked that one at the sale...

If you refer to her as First Mate she will certainly ask who the 2nd mate is....

Alrighty, more pictures of this batch then and I can pack this away... Posting some different pictures with some questions. Thanks! the cinnabar tourmaline in some kinda matrix I don't know, any guesses? I have a guess here, but I'd like to hear opinions without my influence. This will probably the only item that stays out and makes it to a display. This is completely hallow. Other than the 2 holes shown it's shell is solid. No clue... Three close ups (best I can) of the emerald/tourmaline Wondering if youngite comes in different colors. Are they BOTH youngite? A coral for James - 'bout baseball sized. Think it's worth opening up? That's All Folks!

The third one is Kona dolomite from Marquette, MI. I know it's from Marquette, because that's the only place in the world you can get it. It's soft, but I like Kona a lot.
