I've got easily 100 pounds more out there if you want more. Mostly bigger pieces tho... Going to try rice hulls in the vibe with the rhyolite Mr. Phil. And rerun some others to go for high polish. Heating it softens it, and the heated ones are giving me the fuss. Oh yes, more rhyolite. Can I PM you to make arrangements ? Big chunks better for my system. Sure. just gotta figure out what boxes to use.... gonna all be LFRB's I'm afraid.

You going to force me to soup mine up. turtle and the hare Got goodies coming for your birthday fantastic5, no dog turds, just jewels.(remember Hubbies warning haha) Used to set a paper bag full of dog do in front of the front door, set it on fire and ring the doorbell and run hide, but you live too far away. Ever try the pigeons between the door and screen door one?

Let me send you a large flat rate box or two of rice hulls. I bought a 50 pound bale. From California. Louisiana has it, but by truck load. $27 + $55 shipping. Rice hulls weird, they are 20% opaline silica. They sink like a rock, and tough as a ten cent steak. Don't absorb much moisture. It was the suggested filler for my Viking tumbler for soft rocks. The Viking has a horizontal cylinder hopper and hard filler often segregates from the rocks to one side unlike a donut hopper. LFRB's sound fine. Let me know what I owe.

I was curious to see what a mere handful would do when thrown in a vibe.

Rice hulls here [McMinnville, OR] $15 for 50lb. at local feed store. We have about 75lbs. slag glass, ma has been wanting to do some thing with it for quite a while. Have it running in the big rotary with grit embedded plastic triangles, 80 grit, and rice hulls; thanks jamesp. Going to open it in a couple days.

S Carolina used to grow the heck out of rice. I guess the west took over. you going to use the hulls for padding ?

Yup, I did my morning check today and was greeted with too much clacking so I opened it up for a look. Got a significant amount of volume reduction, so it's grinding, but the 12 cups of rice hulls were reduced to pieces about the size of medium sand. I put in about twice that much in hulls, quieted it down, will be paying close attention. I weighed several pieces of the glass, averaged 3.35 oz. each.

They should break down in a rotary. And may make a thick slurry. Sounds like the glass is getting reduced. It is normal to have to add glass every day till they get more rounded. 3 ounces is fair size pieces. The recycle glass averages 1/2 inch. it sure makes a good filler for bigger pieces, and easy to separate by sifting. But it grinds fast too, making a lot of mud and gas in coarse grind.

I don't mind the hulls breaking down, want cushioning. Much quieter today.

I don't mind the hulls breaking down, want cushioning. Much quieter today. I have to say that the paste from the hulls in the vibe is very effective. Thick but allows movement. Tested the grind by throwing a couple of polished obsidians in the 1000 run and in 18 hours the polish was gone. So the grit is making contact thru that thick mash. And the paste is very evenly distributed. And much less sensitive to over watering. Looks like a way to go for soft stuff, will see what the polish cycle says. Used newspaper before and it breaks down after a point to offer no protection, catching you off guard. I think the fact that the hulls sink makes it better for using in water. Not many organics sink. Not many organics are composed of 20% opaline silica by weight either. Bamboo and horse tail rush are two other grasses high in silica. Glad it is working. Look at this fine paste after 48 hours in the vibe(start at 35 seconds)
