kap, will you and munchie still be setting up a stand if it rains? The rain chances are around 70% on Saturday. Have y'all thought about staying and digging on Sunday? broseph82 says he'll be there come rain or shine. We may go on Sunday and hope the sun comes out. Imagine we'll be slipping and sliding in the red clay... My aunt and uncle decided that would join us for the dig in October because of the rain.

That's what I hear, broseph82. The rain washes away all the dirt and that 'sensual' jamesp red clay. ( LOL, just kidding, jamesp. ) I am dreading getting covered in red clay. The stuff is hard to walk in when you have 5" of it stuck to the bottom of your shoes.

The stuff is hard to walk in when you have 5" of it stuck to the bottom of your shoes. Not only does it wash off the dirt but it makes the rocks wet and easier to distinguish from everything else. They will pop out like sore thumbs! I've never been to graves and hopefully it isn't just a downpour. Either way, we'll be there hounding!

ROFL, jamesp! I think it may be a good idea to take a fan out to the dig if the sun comes out after the rain. I checked NOAA's website for Lincolnton's forecast this weekend, and there's a 90% chance of rain on Saturday and 30% chance of rain on Sunday morning before 9am. I haven't mentioned the rain to Rick, lol. It's going to be nice Friday, though. broseph82Will take some photos, Fossilman. Not sure if we'll find anything, but will write down garock's instructions that he posted. We bought a Little Giant muck cart and muck bucket since Rick has not had time to make a cart. The muck bucket is huge at 70 quarts. The look on Rick's face when he saw the bucket was priceless.

I would like to show up with an umbrella and lounge chair, cooler of refreshments/binoculars and telephoto on rain day. And watch the 15 pound clay caked shoes trudging around. I hope it does not rain gingerkid. I did enjoy taking photos of the mud dobbers in the Withlacoochee.

Me, too, James! Thanks for mentioning chairs and refreshments. May take our chairs, but definitely need to carry our coolers with drinks. Rick tried on cowboy hats at Tractor Supply to wear to the dig. I'm glad he didn't buy one. I was in tears from laughing at him while he "modeled" the hats. jamesp, there may still be time to call Junior and ask if you can host a mud wrastlin' match at the dig.

Gingerkid, first time my wife and I went to Graves Mtn, we had to park down on the hiway. Walk up the hill, then up the ridge to get to the rim of the mine. I had a set of hand trucks with two 5 gallon buckets and of course a few tools. Just as we got to the ridge, it started raining heavy and rained heavy most of the day. About 2 pm a dark cloud south of us came up and looked bad. Then we heard tornado sirens going off and almost immediately lightning got bad. Field trip leader told us to get in the open away from trees and stay away from the high wall. Most of the folks were on their way out. We were half way. We just sat down and watch the storm come and go. It got really dark and lightning was heavy. It rained so hard you could not see across the pit. We were getting worried at this time. About 2:30 pm the sirens went off and the heavy rain was still coming down. While sitting in place, my wife found a75 lb or so boulder covered in phyrophyllite. My wife wanted to save the specimen. By 3 pm, rained stopped and I lugged the boulder out with the hand trucks. It had been so muddy that the tires clogged up with mud and at times stopped turning - dragging the hand trucks until I got to the paved part of the road. I don't what was worse, trying to keep the hand truck with boulder on it from pushing me down the hill to the road or having to walk all the way back to the top of the ridge and back into big pit. Hunted for a while and then suddenly my leg muscles cramped on me - both legs ! I was in so much pain I did not know if I could get out of the pit. Someone gave me some potato chips, lots of salt, and drank all the water I had left - two liters. Got better with the cramps and it took me over an hour to get up the ridge. Did not want the cramps to come back. I still enjoyed the first time trip and we found some neat specimens.

Enjoyed your post, garock, and read it to Rick. I'm glad you were able to get that monster specimen of pyrophyllite to your vehicle even though you had to drag the hand truck most of the way since the wheels were caked in mud. Thank goodness someone gave you some tater chips to help relieve the leg cramps, that does not sound like fun - getting leg cramps. Is this the trip where the dog alerted y'all to lightning that hit nearby? Are you planning on going? I think we'll take some plastic bags and place on the wheels of the cart after the dig, and bring an extra pair of shoes and place our muddy boots in bags, too.

Ms Jan, I am not able to go. Got another commitment. The dog alert was at the top of Chunky Gal Mountain west of Franlkin NC in the National Forest. Hope the rain predicted for tomorrow will wait till the night on Saturaday. Have Fun !

Y'all have fun! Hope the rain holds off for you, nothing fun about walking on stilts made of caked-on clay mud, lol! Downright hazardous at that, easy to break or sprain an ankle.
And when the rain stops (despite everyone's wishes, you just know it is going to rain!), watch out for them skeeters. Fans probably a good idear.

We are half an hour away from Graves and will go by this morning and check it out. If it looks too bad we will travel an hour east to Diamond Hill.

garock, hope to see you there in October later this year! Going to take notes from your previous post of where to find the good xtals, and many thanks for sharing! And when the rain stops (despite everyone's wishes, you just know it is going to rain!), watch out for them skeeters. Fans probably a good idear. broseph82, update?? Heading up to Diamond Hill sounds like a great plan if it's storming at Graves. Y'all have a good time!! It's supposed to be 85* F in Lincolnton tomorrow, and I think jamesp and rockpickerforever's suggestion of taking a fan is an good idear. We'll bring some bug spray in case the skeeters are out for lunch.

Just got 2 inches of rain, good bit of lightning, from Sat 5AM to 8AM. Another wave coming in late noon guessing 3-5PM, more violent winds. The clay will be wet, but the rocks should be shinning. It's not going to be hot. Other than the mud, perfect rock hunting weather. 6 pound rutile crystals, c'mon folks.
