My Genie is on the UPS truck and will be here today. What is the best way to break in the wheels and how long does it take? Thanks, Andrea

Congrats, meviva! (read your thread discussing which unit should you purchase) Don't have a Genie, but I think they recommend taking an agate to the wheels to break 'em in and not sure how long it takes to break them in. Hope someone will chime in. Please post pics of it when you get your machine set up and enjoy!!!

Congratulations. You're gonna love that machine.
The only wheels you have to worry about breaking in are the hard wheels. Just take a scrap of junk agate and make a few passes over the entire width of each wheel. Make sure you use water when doing it. One or two passes over each soft wheel wouldn't hurt, but I don't think it's really necessary.
To avoid cross contamination between wheels, I'd suggest changing water in your pans each time you change grit size. To save time, I usually do a whole bunch of cabs on one wheel at a time. Then hash out the pan and add fresh water before starting the next grit stage.

Congrats! I love my Genie but one thing I have noticed; not enough water spitting up to the wheel with just one of the geysers. After replacing the wheels far too early, I started using both on each wheel as I move along. wipe and/or rinse them before moving to the next tray and that seems to work great.

Hope you are enjoying yourself.
I agree with Frane- I use 2 geysers under the wheel, too. I think most people do.

LOL. The older Genies must have had a stronger pump. One geyser gives me more than enough water.

gingerkid jakesrocks frane braders rockjunquieThanks everyone. UPS delivered it at 4 pm. Took me half an hour to unbury it from the styrofoam peanuts and get them unstuck from me…lol. I did get it set up on it's table and read the manual. I had to be up at 4:30 this morning after only 4 hours of sleep to take my sister in law to surgi-center to have her gall bladder taken out. So it's been a long day…I'm going to wake up early and start playing with it then. I have a piece of agate I can use to break in the wheels and will use both geysers. I will post pics of my progress (good or bad) and I'm sure I will have a questions along the way. So good night for now….see ya in the morning. zzzzzzz Andrea

The leather valve in your pump should come pre oiled, but if you notice that the pump starts delivering less water after a while, there's a red screw in the middle of the pump top. Remove the screw and put about 2 drops of light machine oil in the hole. then replace the screw. I use 3 in 1 oil, but sewing machine oil works too. I've had my machine since 94 and haven't had to rebuild my pump yet. However, I have a rebuild kit standing by just in case.

Congratulations on your new machine! I'm a believer in taking full advantage of the aggressiveness of new grinding wheels by breaking them in with a pile of pre-forms. Larry C.

I like my Genie, too. Also use two geysers at a time. Also clean out the water pans when there is sediment in them, so the geysers don't suck it up. Enjoy! It's fun.

On geyser is ok, but two geysers cut faster and it is easier to see the girdle line.

I use a rubber band to hold both geysers together. Also make sure to put a drop of light oil in the screw hole every so often...................... MrP

The older Genies had a center valve to direct water to one side or other. Now both geysers get air all the time. One works but both really supply a lot of water which is better for the wheels but make operating a little messier. I broke mine in by cutting windows to show the rock club when I was field trip leader. Going from SC to Genie the first few ended up much smaller than I intended.

I lived at the time I ordered mine about an hour and a half from Diamond Pacific. It was cheaper to pay shipping than gas to pick it up. It was packed with the stupid peanuts. Took a long time to remove and after months of use one would occasionally appear. They get static charged from the plastic or something to add to the fun. Remove peanut and can't get it off your hand. I had forgotten that until you mentioned it.

Congrats on your new toy, can't wait to see pics of your learning curve projects as I'm getting looking at getting a cabbing unit soon too.
