I probably can't give you a solid reason why my ID of the woodpecker is that she is a Downy, but that sure looks an awful like the Downy females that we have here in Montana, and if you ask me again tomorrow, I may change my identification! P.S. I just realized what the post title was. Song Bird? No way. Woodpeckers make sounds (noise), but I'd never, ever give them credit for being "Song Birds".

That almost looks like a female Yellow Bellied Sapsucker. If it is, it will pick one of your favorite trees and peck a ring of holes through the bark until it bleeds the tree out causing a slow death. Super tame. You can almost walk up to it and take a swing at it.

Superb acrobat! Sprinkles does well and has run of daughter's downstairs areas. She padded all the legs of wooden furniture to save his skull since he was bumping into everything. She also has a cat, a very patient cat! Sprinkles Squirrel doesn't have normal use of his front arms?/legs?, so she hand feeds him. He's a friendly little critter, but glad I have a cat!

Chipmunk stealing 4 cups of sunflower seeds per morning Pat. I hope Sprinkles does not have such a big appetite. Must be feeding a family and stashing the rest. Sounds like your daughter is very patient too.

jamesp , he is planting you a sunflower garden somewhere! Just one of the reasons I don't feed the birds, do not need anymore weeds sprouting than I currently have. Since water is such a scarce commodity out here, especially when it gets hot, a pond or birthbath will attract them. But I hate it when a raven comes and sits at the waterfall on my pond and dismembers and eats his catch. Last week it was a baby bird. Don't like all the pin feathers and yucky bits going into the pond!

I'm glad that your daughter is able to continue caring for Sprinkles after he suffered a stroke which resulted in blindness, Mrs. Pat.

I think the bird is a female hairy woodpecker based on bill size. As far as I know-Hairy and Downy are marked the same-but hairy is bigger and has a longer beak Females don't have red on the head

No worries, he is stashing them in the sunless forest. Sunflowers should not survive.

James, you said "perfect memory" and "him". Two words that should not be uttered in the same sentence, let alone the same breath!
I don't even put sugar water out for the hummingbirds, and I certainly do enjoy them. Let them fend for themselves, and not depend on man. It's nature's way. We all know that giving handouts for nothing makes things keep coming back and demanding more, lol.

Also agreeing about the dependency issue, but she never forgets to keep the feeder filled. rockpickerforever- We always get into Venus/Mars debates. you usually win, probably always.

A good memory can sometimes put you at a disadvantage. He said, she said. What I really need to work on is knowing when to shut up. In the scheme of things, it's just not that important...

Spousal discussions have a way of going ballistic. Somewhere I read about the wisdom of not opening my trap. What's that song, lot older, lot less bolder...Bob S. ??

Yeah, Bob Seger. The guy has a way with lyrics. "So you're a little bit older and a lot less bolder than you used to be"... Rock and Roll Never Forgets. Here's a thought for you jamesp - A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory.
