I had to stay close to a running saw today, so finally got started on contour polishing this piece. It really goes pretty fast, if I work on it!

Awesome ... keep this thread updated! I'd love to follow the progress! Paul Yes! Please show the finished piece! I'd also like to know more about the disks, did you have to grind it smooth, what disk again, etc. I love the pieces I have seen that are for sale, but can't afford them, so if I ever get to have one, it will have to be something I do myself. You may be what gets me to my dream...having a full end-polished pet-wood piece.

It is amazing how much you can remove in a hurry, This wood is pretty soft really and in finial stage you have to be real careful and not get it too hot or will blister and flake off tiny pieces and then you get to back up. That is what I had to do today. The second and third pictures were taken with it wet and will be pretty close to what it will be like when I am finished.

I worked on it today, I had to back up as I got ahed of myself. I went back to 200 mesh, Photo is after 300 mesh, you can see along the bottom an area that I missed, I have to let it dry and check it before I continue to the next size. When it is wet it looks like the finished product.

Are you doing this wet or dry?

Are you doing this wet or dry? Wet, the pads are made to use wet, I use a squirt bottle, I am too cheap to buy a polisher that supplies the water. If the material gets hot, it causes little flakes to chip off. Slow pad speed and lots of water. I have to let it dry so I can check to see if I covered the complete surface.

This one photographed dry after 800 mesh pad. Starting to turn the corner to a shine.

This real close to being finished. Some areas need some more work, I have a felt pad around here somplace, if I can find it will use some cerium oxide to finish it off, but it not too bad the way it is.

love it! How much time did it take (estimated?) from start to finish?

love it! How much time did it take (estimated?) from start to finish? I work in jumps and spurts, but really I could not have spent over two hours on it, if that. It really goes pretty fast. I will work on the polish a bit more, I prefer the polish from cerium oxide over just the diamond pads. The biggest problem I will have is in finding a spot in the living room to stash it!

Nice piece of petwood- Question, why not just shave it with a rock saw?? Not sure what yo mean by "shave". I could have made one cut and then polished the end but i was afraid I would lose some of the colors, it can change real fast. I thought about slabbing it it, but was afraid it would not stay together real good. I like the contour polish look also. I can always cut it later, a bit hard to put it all back together!

Shave=just slicing a thin layer off to expose the beauty-but I see you concept now, probably was wise to do it your way....

Pretty much done, a couple of different angles to show the color better. by the way it is 13 by 8 across the polished face.
