My dogs compete to get in the dog crate. It is viewed by them as a security den typical of a natural canine den.
Yes, misuse of crates does happen. But not often. For the most part it is a temporary mode of transport.
And dogs that spend much time in a crate will not win dog shows. Well exercised healthy dogs compete at dog shows.
