Yes, captbob, you would be surprised at the number of race horses that have not only Twitter accounts, but Facebook pages, too. One of my favorites is Lava Man. Have you forgotten about Mr. Ed? Of course, it is the trainers or owners (or fans) that create the accounts, but some are amusing to read. Some horses do know know when race day is on, if they lost a race, and where the wire is located. One time John Henry dragged his groom to the winner's circle after he lost a race. Cigar would not accept a peppermint from his jockey, Jerry Bailey, when he lost. "The Savage" Eclipse Award-winning photo of Great Prospector biting Golden Derby during the Tremont Stakes on July 21, 1980 Golden Derby, under Darrell McHargue, led wire-to-wire for a neck victory over Great Prospector, who was ridden by Jorge Velasquez. Eventual Champion Two Year Old Lord Avie, under Jerry Bailey, was a length back in third.

rockpickerforever, that was Wise Dan. Wise Dan is bad-to-the-bone and is an 8-year-old gelding. They made commercials with Wise Dan as the Most Interesting Horse in the World trying to promote horse racing, lol. From wikipedia: "He is the first horse to win the same three Eclipse Awards in consecutive years, having been named American Horse of the Year, Champion Older Male and Champion Male Turf Horse in 2012 and 2013." He was just released from the vets to resume jogging after suffering an injury before the Breeders Cup last year. I wish they would retire him while he is sound, but he loves to race. Another one of my faves is Jim Rome's horse, Shared Belief. ETA - almost forgot Ben's Cat.

apologies, this was supposed to go in members' "life the universe and etc". No explanation how it got here, I didn't double check though. ( insert shame-faced figure here). Thinking of you Gingerkid and will be watching along with you tomorrow as the race is run! Note to self, no more posts before my usual 5 cups of coffee in the mornings)

The most interesting horse in the world, what an honor. WTG Wise Dan! Guess they don't call him wise for nuthin'.
So, are you a stable girl? JK! Shareholder? Still tryin' to figure out your angle (just curious). Or just a big-time horse racing fan? Pretty pricey hobby, even more expensive than rocks! There's a reason it is called the "Sport of Kings."
ETA - And I LOVE that photo "The Savage." It is awesome! Haven't been for a couple years now, but used to go to Del Mar races with my family for my mom's birthday. Just for fun, I never came home with more money than I brought. Not so good at picking winners...

The greatest to ever race in modern times was Northern Dancer, small horse with three white feet, supposed to mean a future of unsoundness. Belonged to Winfield Farms a Canadian concern owned by E.P. Taylor. His stud fee was one million dollars without a live foal garantee unless the mare stayed on Winfield. It was the largest thorobred operation in the USA. Located in Elkton Md. Northern Dancer won two legs of the Triple Crown and didn't get the big Crown but he did win the Triple Crown of turf racing. His get won more than any other stallion will ever sire again due to his greatness but also because the racing industry is smaller than it used to be. I was the manager of Southern States Farm Coop. in Elkton during the Dancers reign, I sold Joe his feed and farm supplies. Northern Dancer went almost sterile in his twenties and could only settle a couple of mares, after a couple more years he went completely sterile and Mr. Taylor closed Winfield Farms and moved all but Northern Dancer to the home farm in Canada. The Dancer was to live his life out on Winfield. After a few more years the Dancer passed away. He was groomed and placed in a silk lined mahogany coffin with gold fittings and loaded in a rental truck. Art Mitchell a retired trainer lovingly known as Papa Bear to his wife and as Snake Mitchel to the racing community drove the Dancer to Canada for his eternal vigilance over his future get and grand grand get.. on and on. Winfield Farms was then broken up and sold piecemeal. Patsy Dupont, daughter of Billy Dupont (the Dupont!) tried to organize a consortium to buy it and maintain the operation. Despite her best efforts and several trips from Donald Trump it grew into a housing tract. Gone the broodmare motels, foals romping in the sparkling dew early as the sun rose. Gone the two year olds thundering around the training track. Gone the trumpeting of breeding stallions on the muscle. An Era came, an Era boomed, an Era quietly faded into the fog of time. Art Mitchell too is gone now. He owned and trained a little mare named Teepee Toes. Art could have lived comfortably the rest of his life had he sold her to Mr. Taylor for a broodmare for Northern Dancers harem, he didn't because then what would he do, where would the challenge be, what could he achieve without little Teepee Toes in the breeding and racing business? Teepee Toes had a baby girl that had a colt that bred my mare that had a filly that had my stallion that is 18 years old now and is a APHA registered father of 150 plus Paint horses. His name is In The Chips Today and he has won six high point all around year end championships!!! I bred his grandparents and I trained and rode and showed him myself. The old boy and I won his last trophy saddle and belt buckle after I lost my leg, he did the work and planning.....I went along for the RIDE!!!

That's pretty cool that your family took your mom on her birthday to the track at Delmar, rockpickerforever. Just a equine fan, Jean. Also enjoy watching other equine sports such as dressage. Unfortunately, one of the first races I remember watching is Ruffian on the track against Foolish Pleasure. Ruffian is buried at the flag pole at Belmont track. The owners of Mucho Macho Man that live near Atlanta tried to bring horse racing (betting and possibly races) to Georgia. Still hoping. www.gahorseracing.org/snowmom used to help with retired race horses. Please share, Deb. One of our forum members that has participated on the forum a couple of times, crazy8s, owns an ex-race horse. His bloodline contains TC winners, Secretariat and Count Fleet. Enjoyed reading your post, orrum! I wish you could post pics of your partner, In the Chips Today. Have a Canadian forum friend that adored Northern Dancer. He was an awesome horse! The horses that i enjoy watching race (Wise Dan, Shared Belief, and Ben's Cat) all have his bloodline. Please check out Shared Belief's pedigree - no inbreeding for 5 generations. Rick and I watched the Belmont races on NBC Sports this afternoon. There was a bunny in the inside hedges that managed to move out of the way during the Belmont Gold Cup race. I tried to find a pic or vid of the rabbit since they replayed it on televison, but cannot find it online. Read that Secretariat's owner, Ms. Penny Chenery, will be attending the Belmont. Secretariat's Belmont record still stands (and Derby and Preakness records)...and the margin of victory at 31 lengths will probably never be beaten. "He is moving like a Tremendous Machine!"

Secretariat too is descended from Northern Dancer. Secretariat was a very unique horse, had a incredible huge heart. He sired nothing much worthwhile. The large heart gene can only be passed on by a female mare so Secretariat daughters did not have the large heart but some had the gene and could pass it on to their male offspring as a huge heart.
Gingerkid Chips is descended from Man Of War thru holistic son War Admiral. He also is inbred to the thorobred Three Bars with 16 crosses. Three bars was a renowned sire of Thorobred runners and more important a foundation sire of both Quarter Horses and Paints. If you want to see Chips look on my blog there should be pics on thete.

orrum, please send me a link to your blog so I may see Chips. I read a book on Sham (Sham: Great was Second Best by Phil Dandrea) that mentioned he and Secretariat were 'cousins' and both had the 'X-factor.' Sham's heart weighed 18 pounds.

ex spouse( and I) worked at a stud farm which had a northern dancer son they used on quarter horses, don't remember the name, we only used his stable name. so many other breeds used thoroughbred infusions to improve performance. I lived in southern IL for a few years and worked at a farm which recycled thoroughbreds off the track, made them into polo ponies, hunter jumpers, dressage horses. We just put miles on them teaching them something besides "run". It was a fun job. I worked with horses for over 40 years: caretaker, rescue rehabs, re- trainer, riding instructor, competitive trail riding, horses a passion since I saw the first one at age 4. horses in my heart and on my mind forever.

Gingerkid my blog is on my profile just click the website for oneleggedcoeboy.
Snowmom I grew up with gated horses, primarily with Saddlebred racking horses. Speed was king snd even today there isn't anything like laying back on a speed racking horse and asking the horse for more, the smoothness and flying speed without breaking gait was the bomb! I switched to recycled Thorobreds when I was transfered to Elkton Md. Learned to play Polo there and truly fell in love with riding to the hounds. Rode with the Dupont hunt at Fairhope many times, it's truly exhilarating. Also rode in some hunt seat classes at schooling shows. That helped a lot in trying for all around champion awards later after I moved to North Carolina. You know I showed Chips grandfather Enough Dun Today to a all around year end Championship also. Plus a son of Chips named Essence Wins Today I showed to 3 year end all around Championships. Sounds like I am bragging but hey I raised 6 generations of Champions and if I told tell you then how would I honor those horses? Chips mother died at 3 years old when Chips was 3 months old. Her name was Impress Cat Today, she got 5th place in her first and only show in a Futurity at Asheville under eight judges averaged showing in Hunterm Jumper, it's the second largest show in the U.S. for registered APHA horses. Chips father was San Bueno a APHA Supreme Champion, there aren't very many of them. Oh well that's enough.
I can't do pics but if you pm me your cell number Gingerkid I will send you some pics.

Thank you for sharing, snowmom and orrum. My mother grew up on a farm and had a pair of horses and my grandfather had a mule that she would ride. She also taught horseback riding lessons while attending Judson College in 'Bama. orrum, I checked your blog for pics of Chips. You've got some awesome pics of wild mustangs, a mule, and Susan and Sadie, but I cannot find the photos. Just watched Untapable place second in the Ogden Phipps Stakes on HRTV. -> -> Belmont races will be shown on NBC Sports at 2:30pm EST. Have to change the channel to local NBC channel to watch the Belmont coverage at 4:30pm EST.

He ran didn't he. Won on a hard dry track in Kentucky. Won in total slop in the Preakness going away. Won at Belmont going a long distance on a track famous for being soft and deep plus was leaving them in the dust!
Did yall notice he needed both ear plugs and they tied his tongue down? That horses is apparently a nervous mess. Now he can retire to a nice quiet life of makin luv! He earned it too!!!
