Tigers eye has always shaped up pretty quick for me in just 60/90 Has it? Did you do any prep work? And what is pretty quick? I'm expecting 4-6weeks to get them rounded. After the first week I will decide if it's broken down enough to continue with 60/90.

Those are going to turn out very nice. Agree with stonewizard- I recently finished a batch that rounded up really nice and seemed quicker than my jasper / agate / flint usually takes me to rough You'll be fine with 40/70 though- it may speed things along Can't wait to see them done

Thanks cardiobill ,after about a week the grit will breakdown anyway. Thanks for your input. Everything I've seen says it takes a very long time. I've processed agate in 10 days of coarse which is around the same hardness. It's way better to learn from those before myself. I read somewhere tiger's eye had a MOHs of 5.5-6 which I knew was complete garbage of misinformation.

No prep work. The edges round off nice in 3 weeks ( weekly recharges) for me. I rough shape my stuff in a QT12 so that probably speeds things up a bit.

Thank you darrad that's about average rounding time for a harder stone. I'll let them go for 3-4 weeks with weekly charges of 60/90 for the remaining coarse stage. I filled my 4.5lb barrel as much as I could an added 3.8lb of tiger. I'm going to add more as I lose volume to keep as full as possible. I started with 6lbs of rough an I have 1.4lb to add when needed.

Here is a question for our more knowledgeable minds. I read that tigers eye and pietersite are formed from silicified asbestos . Is there any health issues ?

Tigers eye is not harmful. Useless you are breathing in the dust particles from cutting an whatnot for a prolonged period of time. orrum from what I've read you are correct, its structure definition has changed after scientists have studied the fibrous strands.

Yep, I have read something saying the asbestos gets replaced with silica. This was discussed on RTH a couple years ago if you want to see what was said last time forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/35584Chuck

Thanks for the link Chuck.
Now when I cut I always use a mask ,the one with a side filters . But I forget to put it on when I am opening my barrels sometimes. And sometimes there is that organic smell .

riverrock its always good to work in a well ventilated area when working with any potentially hazardous materials such as the many types of rocks we all work with that could harbor dangerous particals.

I checked my barrel today and it's starting to round nicely but losing some volume so I threw some more rocks in. I'll recharge on Thursday with 60/90 for another week. It all should be ready to move on to 220 Thursday next week.
I will add pictures Thursday evening and after each following stage. After 500 and prepolish they will be put into the loto for final polish.
This will be my first batch in my loto but I believe I have learned a lot of do's and don'ts from other loto experiences other members have brought to attention.

Looking forward to the progression photos. Well you're in luck, I just did a grit change and rinsed to check progress changed from 46/70 to 60/90. I will be adding them to my first post shortly.

I need to post the pictures from my computer. I still can't figure out how to paste links from my new phone. They just finished 500 in the Loto, I will get on my PC later.
