I'm just compulsive. I started by reading Steve Hart's book and everything I could find on the internet. Some people seem to think that grit contamination (even one little grain) is a major problem. I have equipment for each stage in it's own plastic box and try very hard not to contaminate. As I get used to doing this, I guess I'll relax a little.

BTW, I can assure you I'm not a spelunker. I sit on the couch in my clean flip flops and buy rocks on the internet!

Well, first of all, I'm not a "digger." Then, I wouldn't know what I'm digging. I know, I know, I'm supposed to learn all this, and maybe one day I will. Right now, I'm having too much fun buying pretty rocks.
I think I've finally gotten my onyx through the first stage. I cleaned it out after 5 days, and the barrel and all the rocks, what's left of them, were clean. They were not smooth, but I'm still going to move them on. Right now they're washing in Dawn & water. I haven't put Dawn in a barrel before, but, so far, it's not sudsing out.
