I'd have left it right there. I didn't think it looked that good. There's a guy in Michigan who leads family fossil hunts in Alpena. He calls himself Paleo Joe. I listened to him talk once and he said he's parked his truck on top of Petoskey stones. There are huge ones in some of our local quarries. There's a trip report, I think it's on McRocks, of a trip to the Alpena LaFarge quarry. One picture is of two people rolling a 100 lb. Petoskey into a van. Just a yard rock.

I do not want to take anything away from him and his find. Great job. However.....the rock he found was not 100% petoskey. There is a lot of matrix based on the pics that I saw online. What is funnier is that he will not disclose the location. In one of the articles that I saw, he described having to climb 114 stairs. There is only one place near Northport, MI that has 114 stairs and that is Peterson Park. Furthermore, he took the picture of the stone on a large bolder that is on the beach at that park. I do have to admit that finding that large of a petoskey stone at that park is really good. There area lot of big rocks there but few petoskeys of that size. However, there are several other areas in the state that have them that size and larger. Unfortunately I left one behind that was that heavy and almost 100% petoskey (see below).

The attack of the 92/93 pound Petoskies.
He carried it up all those stairs-makes sense, his name is O'Brien. A dumb but stout Irishman.
Is this going to be on National news too ? How many bloody Michigan stations are going to post this rock ? OH CRAP ! 25 pound DNR limit, just read that. When O'Brien finds out he has to return it he will kill the DNR officer and then it will go national, saga may never end.
Let's send Chuck's photos of those 500 pound puddingstones he posted to the DNR ! Blackmail time

All of the 24 pound ones were from state land though Someone should clarify if that 25 pound rule is also in effect in the water? I guess I never considered under water to be state land? Do you think Obrien tried to escape to Canada via Drummond Island today? www.mlive.com/news/grand-rapids/index.ssf/2015/09/report_us_border_patrol_agents.htmlChuck

"Near the cabin, agents were fired upon by Kid Rock. They returned fire using their service-issued weapons and took cover at the same time. The agents were not injured. It was not known Thursday afternoon if the shooter was struck by their gunfire. Kid Rock remains at large." Here he is, on RTH !!! Come get him. Misprint, should be Apace Tear Kid

I too have been struggling with Petosky stones. I've been roughing them several ways..... Lot-O-Tumbler with 120-220 or spun in a small rotary. They are all good at the roughing stage. They seem okay at the 500 grit intermediate as well. I've mostly gone then to dry polishing with my old trusty Midway 1292 tumbler (used mostly to polish brass for reloading) and fine ground walnut shells (petco reptile bedding) with Aluminum oxide polish added. 4 or 5 days brings them to a decent sheen (be careful to limit the number of rocks in the dry vibe....if they collide they WILL BRUISE). I then buff them on a cotton wheel with ZAM or Fabuluster. I get a nice sheen but upon close examination they all have very tiny pits all across the surface. Some show additional undercutting in the softer parts of the coral. I tried to post some photographs of my polished Petosky stones but every attempt was met by a message that says: "ERROR: this forum has exceeded its attachment space limit....your file will not be uploaded". Any way around this to post some photos? ?

Plus you cant dig for any of them. They have to be loose on the ground. The guy from the story is meeting with the DNR this afternoon to discuss his find. Chuck

Here is where we get into technicalities. The Great Lakes shoreline in MI in "public property" but is it "state managed land" per the article suggestion. The park that he was at is a township and/or county park. It is NOT a state park. Can the state apply this "law" in this case? Furthermore, most of that rock was matrix and NOT petoskey stone. Do they have to subtract out the non-petoskey stone? I've never heard of the 25 pound rule in MI. Needless to say that I am not that happy about it if there is one.

I'll have to watch my limits....... 25 pounds of any rock or mineral so not being 100 percent Petoskey stone wont matter. I think he learned a lesson about social media. I read somewhere that it got 400,000 hits in 24 hours. www.mlive.com/news/grand-rapids/index.ssf/2015/09/state_wants_a_gander_at_93-pou.htmlChuck

Check it out mi: www.9and10news.com/story/30110130/dnr-looking-into-92-pound-petoskey-stone-found-in-lake-michiganNot bragging, but Georgia rarely enforces any rock collecting laws if in fact they have them. Maybe someone has had experiences to the contrary. Artifact collecting yes. Ah, Chuck got ya covered. Worse in Florida, state laying claim to about all water ways. Slowly outlawing all rock collecting in water ways.
