There has been suspicion that coarser grits may wear out rotary barrels faster. And that it is hard to get the coarser grits to circulate with the rocks without using clay or old slurry to thicken slurry. I am going with the 30 grit for coarse grind to speed up the shaping, and do use clay as a thickener in most cases. This time I only added the grit 4 times in 21 days and maintained a thick slurry generated by the rocks alone. Had to add water to thin the slurry a bit in the last two grit additions. Here is the before and after 21 days, I think these are well shaped for 21 days: I know the tumbling world's opinion is to use SiC 60/90, 60, 80 etc. But I question using such fine grits. If you tried to shape rocks with SiC 220 it would take a long time. bigger is better ? I think so. Before, mostly hammer broke: After After, closer photo

What do you do with all your tumbled rocks James? There is a long list of friends, relatives, business associates, mechanics, clients, waiters/waitresses, etc that have kids and/or rock interests. It amazes me how tumbled rocks can attract people to you when you have no people skills like myself. Never really sold a single tumble but have given many pounds away. Kids freak out about them like we do. Customers just drove off with a fire pit and I asked if they had kids, "yes", and out of my pocket a handful of tumbles. Eyes lit up and "oh yes". "They will love those". Maybe they will spread my name in the fire pit biz to their neighbors ... Always keep a tub of tumbles in my truck and car. People even tell me about places they or their friends find rocks. Makes my nieces and nephews ask of Uncle Jungle Jim all the time, doesn't get better than that. Leverage with in-laws for a fulcrum on the wife, ha. sorry, you asked. PS. My dear friend Steve in the avatar, his daughters Keily and Amberly will kill for tumbles. Got them into shark teeth hunting. Down south of you captbob, where Steve takes them in the RV, uh, something Beach. Ah, Venice Beach.

I appreciate the answer. You have found a good use for them! Good on ya.
I don't tumble what I could simply because I have no need/use for the finished rocks. Same reason I don't cab. What the heck would I do with them?
I'll keep tumbling I'm sure, but after knowing I can do it this well, the desire is lessened.
Kinda like climbing Mt. Everest. Why do it twice?
PS. EVERYTHING here is called "something" Beach.

Conquerer eh ? Was such philosophy utilized back in your dating years ? I think not. Each new rock that gets tumbled has it's own character. Granted, somewhat repetitive.
Now a new(rock) is always interesting to see with a final polish. Just moved these quartzite stones and put them in the vibe today. Am anticipating their final outcome.
I think you have tumbled many varieties, way more than I. You seem to shop rocks on Ebay a good bit.
As far as dating, I have dated many more ladies than you. probably not...

When i get tumbler up and running again i plane to followhis lead. I hope you do too.

I drove a tourist related boat on some of the most popular beaches in Florida for over 25 years. Each tumble back then each also presented unique challenges, but most didn't require the any time. So yes, philosophy was much the same. BTDT, move on. It was an interesting life. I should write a book.

As for your coral James,I grind mine (rough ends, etc) than tumble them..... Makes good sense. It is often sharp and jagged and grinding helps a bunch. It is hard and slow to tumble, pushed me to do coarser grits.

Ha, yes, four inquiries by ladies for 30 inch pits this week. I delivered one this morning to a gal that does pruning on 'vintage' shrubs like Boxwoods. She had an apartment in a free standing building 1/2 bookstore and 1/2 her apartment and very downtown spit on the sidewalk close to the busy road. She paid cash, insisted on helping me carry it to her patio out back. I gave her and her 1/2 Plot hound/1/2 Whippet dog some tumbled coral. She asked for just pink ones. Told her I was going rock hunting, should have invited her. Will depend on the vibe to polish those rockpickerforever.

Have you looked at your metal work closely ?
