The ones we have anyways That's kinda what I has thought all this time. Agates could be formed in the voids left behind from trees/wood, but also in gas pockets or most any other hollow cavities. Not necessarily limb casts. "Montana agate is limb casts!" sounds like a pretty definitive statement.

The fact Montana Moss Agates aremostly alluvial and rounded into cobbles does not change the fact they formed originally as limb cast. I have pieces here that look like the original limb, not rounded out by river action. Have a look www.harmons.net/Montana_Agate.html the last paragraph is pretty relevant. More googling will find you more reference to this phenomenon. It is pretty welll known. For instance the geo dude at my local lapidary class knew it when I brought him my samples.

Your statement infers that all Montana agates are limb casts. I'm kinda thinking that all that was needed was a void to allow the agate formation. Would it matter whether these cavities were created by trees, gas bubbles or other happenstances? Thanks for the link, good reading. I'm taking this sentence in the last paragraph: " mineral laden silica-water flowed into the cavities and pockets left by the dying trees and bubbling lava." to mean the necessary voids came from multiple sources. Maybe I'm wrong. It happens I guess we have officially welcomed our new member here with her first thread hijack!

Thx and cheers to Monday I found a chunk at Fallon that was over 100 pounds. There was a slightly smaller chunk too, but by the time I carried it to the truck, I had no interest in the smaller one.

Hi footsteps (sorry don't know your real first name yet ;-) the easiest way for you I think is to go to your tumbler picture. Click it to load it into window by itself. Then right click on it and select "copy image address" Then going back into your RTH post, click on the picture icon to insert image. Then right click on "Image IRL" box and select the paste option (or use Cntl+V method). Then you should be good to go. It is always good to preview your post before you publish you can check out the code used for this picture if you do a "quote reply". Hope this helps. - Mark

I was too tired to fool with it. I ended up giving it to a girlfriend. She is well worth a 100 pound chunk of pet wood. Hell, I would give her a 100 lb chunk of AZ wood.
