I'd say about 15% of the load in the 15pound tumbler suffered from some chipping or fracturing due to to high of rpm, not keeping the barrel full enough and a thin slurry I think. Overall I was really happy with my first batch and learned some lessons, I now have a much better idea of what I'm doing on this second load I'm working on. These were done a few weeks before Christmas, sorry for the delay. Please let me know what ya'll think.

Way better than my first 3 loads. Love Mcdermitt wood. Clear Oregon agates too, polishes like Montanas and very hard. Hats off to the big Mcdermitt in your palm. Sometimes a big rock beats the others up. Rocks about 8 ounces and bigger become a challenge unless you have lots of smalls or a thickened slurry. Tumbles are great but the big one is a trophy.
Food for thought
I add clay to make a slurry like a medium thick milkshake, run 50% full, big rocks and the most delicate. Good balance of sizes, but still not as good as the balance could be. Result is consistent reliable protective slurry, great abrasive movement, 50% full long grinding avalanche within, and still protects thins and delicates. I thought the thick slurry would prevent the grit from getting to the rocks but seeing quite the contrary. It is not conventional, but this method is reliably working for me.

You have some great rocks to work with and the tumble came out nice too.

Wow, thanks! It wouldn't have turned out near this good or at all (loving the new motor James) without everyone's help! James what is Mcdermitt wood? I am not familiar, but I found that on the Columbia below the John Day Dam. Here is the rest of the petrified wood from that batch... Gave this one to my Dad for Christmas

Nice collection of material you have there, and well done, especially for a first run.
McDermitt wood comes from an area primarily west of McDermitt, Nevada, right on the OR-NV border. It's actually in Oregon, but you have to go into Nevada a couple hundred feet to get west 4 miles, then back into Oregon. The area is huge and much collectable material available. McDermitt is ~155 miles south of Burns, OR and 75 miles North of Winnemucca, NV.

Oh cool, that's nice to know about Mcdermitt wood. I've been wanting to go rock hunting out that way anyway. I found a few more favorite rocks looking through the tumbles lol: Thanks for looking, I think that's all folks!

Na, not "darn Easterner", you've gotta get out here and see it. We all have our spot and our unique stuff.

great batch! I'd say you're off to a pretty strong start. Love the material, the wood, banded agates, really nice stuff.

Wish we had coral like you Georgia folks have. That's about the most consistently solid material I've worked with, and great color.

petrified, you did a great job on these! Especially for a first time tumble!!! I'm still waiting on my first tumble to get out of coarse stage...so it's yet to be seen what quality it will be. You have some very nice rocks to work with, looks like quiet a variety there of some nice solid stuff!!! Keep at it!!!!!
