Just done the first clean up... Plan on doing doing short 3-4 day runs with 80 grit to maximize the grind rate until I need to move on. Saving the washed out grit as will still be useful for other loads, that have don't need a really harsh grind. Will need to get these in the post back approx 4 weeks from the deadline to be confident they will get back in time. (In saying that I bet they will get back in a week).
Cheers Scott

OK guys.... starting to get there. Hope all is going well for every one else. Unfortunately my rough wasn't the greatest from a starting point of view. From some of the fractures I would say that a D9 bulldozer run over the petrified tree trunk that it came from. Also some of the pieces are showing variable hardness which has caused some issues. However I have about 9 pieces that are shaping up nicely so should get 5 beautiful flaw free entry pieces. Up to round eight (or is it nine) of the 4-5 day 80 grit recycle and no pre grinding cracking etc. Keeping the barrel very full to keep the action as gentle as possible. How's everyone else getting on?
Cheers Scott

Yep that rough looks way familiar... Hang in there you just never know what could happen. A few year back I had a piece of petrified wood that look like it was going to a junker after the first 7 or 8 rough cycles. However, after another 7 cycles in the rough it was one of the winners (in a set of 5) in the "tumbled stones from any origin" in the New Zealand lapidary contest. Mind you it started of as big as a baseball and ended a lot smaller Cheers Scott

Looking good. Mine are on hold for a little bit. I want to cut mine, I threw them in the rough stage as is. I'm going to try and get to it this week.

Should just add that I have another 5 or six pieces that are not far off. Will take another 3-4 rough cycles to get there. Unfortunately all my rough had many fractures going through all the pieces so has been a long road to tumble them out. Really enjoying the process though as it focuses the mind and really makes sure that you are patient with the tumble. Will be tight but still on course to getting the show pieces in the mail for the deadline.

I think there is an extra level of satisfaction when you start with horribly fractured material and actually work through it and get a good tumble. Last years obsidian did not offer that challenge. Well I finally managed to get five reasonable stones packed up and ready to go. Unfortunately after I got them packed I realized I didn't have a picture of them. So here is a picture of the packed box ready to go in the post with a bunch of the rejects in front of it. Looking forward to seeing the final three in a whiles time. Cheers Scott
