I don't know if you can call it 'a pile', but it wraps all around this guy's work shop and spills across the drive. 90% is Kentucky agate, but there was also material he's collected from around the world.
I imagine it would be worth coming here and looking around after a good rain. Lot's of color, but a bit dusty.
I could go on and on, there were so many to look at. There were halves, slabs, and also plenty of uncut rocks to look through. Some were absolutely huge...
Some that made the trip home.
I'm still amazed at all the variety in color and pattern available around here. Super stoked to have a connection to go to for knowledge and, obviously, a lot of rock to look through.

It would be a good day just being able to paw through all that stuff, thanks for the show.

Hey, garagerocker, come pick me up and we can go picking! Did you pay for that KY agate? I have no KY agate that is cut, currently. I'm hoping some members can pull through, though!

I keep hearing you can find agate around Brodhead, even a little red ribbon has been found. Rare, but it's there, so they say. Ever hear of that?

Garagerocker, there is white and brown and red agate around Brodhead, for sure. Brown is most common, red is uncommon, white is uncommon too. Some kinds are more translucent than others. There's more colors than that. Like green, orange, grey. The thing about agates here though is that they're like 95% geodes, very rarely solid.

I'm sure you know that Western KY is the only part of the state getting the total eclipse. If you are coming for that, you should visit the Ben E Clement fluorite museum. You're right there. It's a fair drive from there to here, but if you're in the neighborhood...

It's slowly, so slowly making it's way from his place to mine. Geologic time seems less ironic...

This guy doesn't want to be widely known, does he? I don't mind. I'll just continue collecting where I know I can find a bit of agate...

This guy doesn't want to be widely known, does he? I don't mind. I'll just continue collecting where I know I can find a bit of agate... He's a nice guy, but he doesn't sell online or anything. He does shows around the area and just recently has started to invite the rock club to come over and pick through his personal stuff on occasion. He indicated I could come back any time, even if just to pick his brain and get a feel for what it is I'm looking for out there in the creeks.
I'm sure we can get out and do some picking. What we really need is a good heavy rain to turn the creeks over. We haven't had that in a while and the places I've been have been picked pretty thoroughly.
