My husband only wears a wedding ring and a bracelet. It has been my habit to buy him a chainmaille bracelet each time he wears one out. (I have been getting anodized aluminum, which he likes, but it wears out.) Well, DH loves the viking knit, so, after working in copper, I got the nerve to get some 24g sterling to make him a forever bracelet. I like the 24g because it will hold up better, I think, and it works up pretty quick- plus the finished chain is more manly. After a few hours knitting, I thought I had enough done, but when I was finished with the draw, I was probably 1/2 inch off. I switched out the clasp for a Bali s clasp, which he likes better anyway, and wired off the ends a little longer to make the fit perfect. He didn't want it too lose because of his job. He loves it. It looks a lot better in person. The back of the knit (the inside) is patinaed dark, while the outside is rubbed down. It creates a kind of optical illusion that it is all dark. The top of it is shiny which really serves to accentuate the weave. I never thought that I would enjoy doing the knit since I pretty much loath weaving, but I have to admit, I really like it and the results are very satisfying. Now, I need to get better at judging the finished lengths.

My husband only wears a wedding ring and a bracelet. Got a chuckle. I occasionally visit hot springs and most folks' wardrobe is similar Nice weave though!

And Tela wins again with her happy hands. Jim You know, making this was a little different because I knew I was making it for my husband and that he would like it. I was a little paranoid about messing up but very, very satisfied and a little proud of myself as he admired it.

I do not know of a better reward than putting a smile on a loved ones face. Warm and fuzzy comes to mind. A little proud? You should replace the little with something much bigger because you should be big proud of all of your accomplishments I have seen posted here. Jim

You inspired me to start viking knit. And you're right. Judging a whole lot of things is difficult. I've just been working on copper. The 2nd attempt went pretty well, much straighter and smoother. I used the double knit method. but I keep ending up with these really hard places that won't soften up regardless how much I twist and work them. Do you know why this happens? Also, are you using 1/4 or 1/2"?
Your husband's bracelet is just gorgeous. Has a great industrial look, which is good for a man. My only suggestion is perhaps a tougher clasp. I've had a little trouble with those getting hooked on things and opening up.
And another thing... why are those little plastic things 20 and 30 dollars? Crazy money.

I'm using a half inch. They are stupid expensive, aren't they? But, right now they are the only ones making them. I chose that clasp because I thought it would open easily if his bracelet was caught. He wears it with the clasp squeezed closed. But, since he works around a lot of machinery, I thought it best to have one that would bend fairly easily. Sounds like your wires are just getting work hardened. Mine got a little hard towards the end. Try not to let the lead wire touch the crossed wires. I know it will, but be mindful of it. Maybe make the x's a little looser so you aren't drawing the wire through. Glad you're trying it. I'm making myself a necklace now, in silver.... a long one.

I'm making the loops really loose, so much so I haven't had to lift them with the pin more than twice on this last one. I think I'm drawing them thru the plate too thin. I noticed that yours are not nearly as tight as mine, so this must be the case. I got 25' sterling 24ga for a necklace, but I'm going to try another with copper first.

I make my loops really tight and only the very end gets too work hardened. I don't have to lift with a pin, either. Except for adding a new wire. It could be that you are drawing it too thin. Which size tool did you get? I drew that bracelet through the last hole I could get it through (6mm-1/4"). It was really tight, but the chain is still flexible. I read somewhere that you get a longer draw with smaller loops/tighter x's. I get almost double. Seems we have a mystery....

Here is the necklace I made just for me. I haven't decided if I want a patina but the end chains, silver magnetic clasp and beads are patinaed.

The site references images held off-site on different servers. Presuming the OP has elected to move / make the images not publicly viewable.
