Ok, jdubs, my two cents. And a lot of this is what works for your schedule too. My 33b doesn't have the action the bigger QT66 or QT12 have, so mine gets cleaned out every weekend. The QT12 can be cleaned out sooner, I do it every four days. I find my grit has broken down and I have a smooth, creamy slurry. I do use kitty litter to help get a little thicker slurry from the beginning. I'm pleased with the results with this method, but there is no 'right way'. You will settle on what works best for you. You can find many different philosophies if you go back and read old threads. Oh, I use 60/90 in the 33b and 47/90 in the QT12, for now. I've got 50 lbs of Sic 30 ready to go when the 47/90 runs out.

Thanks for the info Garage rocker! The kitty litter idea is neat, i will have to try it. I once built a small forge using wet kitty litter as it turns to clay when wet. It makes a lot of sense! One thing im realizing now that I hav the QT66 is im going to need a lot more course grit!! Im going to have to star buying in 50+ lb quantities like many of you do!

jdubs, I agree, I need to buy 50lb of 30 SiC. I wonder if anyone can offer a vendor who has good quality material at a good price?

I would be interested in this as well, i think I have read some people getting bulk from kingsley North, but I could be mistaken. Im gong to do some more research as this qtt66 is eating grit like a champ!

I buy my 46/70 or 80 from Kingsley North. I have bought all of my other grit from The Rock Shed. I'm not sure how The Rock Shed's coarse grit compares to Kingsley North's.

If i were not a greenhorn i could comment on Rocksheds 60/90, but i can say i love their prices and fast shipping. A++. Spent so much money there this month lol definitely want to check out kingsley as well. Thinking about getting 50lbs of 60/90 but i want to read up on the 46/70 stuff first because i seem to see it mentioned frequently.

I have been using the 46/70 from rockshed and it seems to be working great but then I'm a greenhorn too. I think I want to try the 30 once I have used up all of my 46/70 because it seems like it should last a little longer before breaking down. Maybe my logic is wrong but it seems like if you are starting with something that has part of it already broken down to 70 or 90 then you have less to really do the shaping. It seems like it would take 30 to longer to break down since the particles are larger and all of them start out at the same size. Though it will be interesting to actually measure how long it takes and how much grinding is actually done between the two. So far my personal experiments appear to indicate that using fresh grit (and cleaning out all the old grit/rock dust) every 3 to 4 days gives me the fastest shaping action and after this amount of time none of the grit is still in the 46/70 range. Leaving it longer than 4 days just results in the rocks getting polished as if they are in the later stages. In my mind this is wasted energy since there are still plenty of pits and cracks... that need to be worn away.
