Did you back the Septaitian ? I have a bunch but it seems to crumble when I cab it. Thanks Vic I'm assuming you mean the gray Utah material? No it's not backed - I bought it already slabbed and physically broke away everything that wanted to break and what was left made this big bad solid cab with no stabilizing needed. Tommy, I am always looking for decent septarian. I have always heard that you want the black stuff. I almost never see the black. (I did find a very small set that I made earrings with, though.) Is the gray easily used?

Tommy, I am always looking for decent septarian. I have always heard that you want the black stuff. I almost never see the black. (I did find a very small set that I made earrings with, though.) Is the gray easily used? I'm always on the lookout for black from Michigan - it's harder to get than it seems. I mostly find flats at gem shows and I re-purpose them into cabochons. I've contacted people from this board who collect it and have been flatly refused in my request to purchase some. Oh well ... it comes when it comes. Maybe I will take their advice and get my ass up there and collect it myself lol. I'm not working - I could totally do that if I really wanted too haha. The Utah material is different - more crumbly as I have found on the pieces I brought back from Utah. It breaks up when it gets down in the 6-8mm range. Other than that it works very similar - soft - requires a light touch and a few skipped rollers to achieve a medium/high shine.

It's also a man-made product - chips of blue Kingman turquoise that have been dyed, stabilized, infused with bronze, and compressed. Smells like plastic when your grinding on it so it's hard to call it turquoise anymore but that's their trade name for it so it's all good.
