I cut a couple of slices off this yesterday. It left a thick whitish mess near the blade and rock. The white stripe kind of shines at an angle. I was wondering if it could be asbestos. If it is, is it safe to cut in the saw? What safety precautions should be taken? Thanks, Andrea

Well, before another smartass says it, "It is a rock."
Now, how hard is it?

Arizona Tiger Eye, chatoyant silica infused asbestos, from around Globe AZ. Yes, it has loose fibers so caution should be used when working it...Mel

Yikes!! So now I have asbestos in my saw oil. Should I replace it? I knew that white stuff had to be something bad. I'm glad I only did a couple of cuts. Thanks Sabre52Andrea

Long as you don't breath in the oil and it's wet it should be OK. I wear a respirator ( painters mask)) anyway when I cut. However, watch where you dispose of the sludge cause when it's dry it dries to a dangerous dust....Mel

I was excited when I saw the white stripes shine until I realized it was probably asbestos. I'm not cutting it anymore either. Sabre52 Does the normal tiger eye have asbestos also? Andrea

Tiger eye is silicated crocidolite which is in the asbestos mineral group. I think tiger eye has less loose fibers and more silica though and I've not heard it's especially dangerous to work. Not sure about that though, different hunks may have different properties and more loose fibers. Maybe someone more expert that I can answer that question and maybe I've not been as cautious with it as I should *L*....Mel

When I was first into cutting, I bought a bunch of tigereye and it sucked. Threads would pull out in the saw. Someone told me that the stuff was junk and that was why I got so much of it so cheaply. No one mentioned anything about toxicity.

It aint toxic!
Toxins are things like venoms or poisons. Ingested or delivered thru bite or sting.
Asbestos causes asbestosis in occupational exposure. I suppose if we cut is a LOT, that would be similar to occupational exposure.
But we cut wet with water or oil. And only a certain size class of fiber with long term exposure is the issue.
Larger fibers are cleared from the lungs by coughing and such. Tiny fibers arent big enough to cause damge. Mama bear fibers in continued exposures cannot be cleared and can do little bits of damages. That is why long term repeated exposures are required. Little bits of damages add up over the decades to bring cancers.....
Its why people living in clear creek california or on knob hill san fran dont have issues.despite asbestos being a soil component in their yards!

Thanks Pat I looked it up, that is the stuff I have. It sounds like pietersite is very similar to it. Andrea
